I was at the First and Last in Middletown last night and was shocked they haven't taken down the Paterno picture in the dining room.

I mean sure I get the Xavier coach is in the picture but come on....

He has in the past, but I have no idea where he stands now. It is so sad to see those people still exist (ones that still believe Paterno knew nothing). I don't think anyone thought a grown man started fondling little boys when he was already fully mature. Those deviant behaviors don't just manifest themselves after adulthood. It was just a matter of time before the timeline was pushed further and further back.

I was just in State College for a conference. Still saw Paterno stuff everywhere. Its a weird kind of sentimentalism, hero-worship, etc. echo-chamber stuff.

Nothing like a witch hunt in the morning. The article doesn't present any evidence or documentation that these older events were reported directly to Paterno. It says a child allegedly reported... I can't think of a reasonable scenario where that would actually occur. A child ages 8-10, walks up to the coach and says that man was sexual assaulting me?

In hindsight, this is all very clear and I have no reason to defend Paterno. I do have a reason to put a woah down on convicting people in the court of lubloc opinion based on flimsy media accounts.

On probability alone we have all met at least one predator. Did you notify authorities? But, I never saw anythjng concrete, I had no idea. If I did I absolutely would report it to police.

Of course you would, because life is black and white for the uncommitted bystander. We know predators flock to certain activities, clergy, teachers, and other jobs and activities where kids are around all the time. We should be hearing a lot more of these cases, but we dont. Why?

Because they take great pains to keep it quiet, for one. The other, more applicable reason is that in order to make an accusation like that, you better be darn sure of it. Mores then, than now.

If you want to scorn people who knew about abuse out did nothing, start with the last Pope or the police in PA or the DA who went on to become governor.

I just hope I'm never blasted for something a coworker did. It's ridiculous. There is a very clear line of responsibility in these cases to get justice. It goes from victim to police. In the event of a minor victim, victim parent or guardian to police.

This is just unfocused anger trying at to cope with a horrendous act. It's not partucu helpful to the cause.

We know for a fact that Paterno knew about the allegations and continued to allow Sandusky access to kids on campus for YEARS. Your comparisons about your co-workers are about as silly and inaccurate as possible.

You are free to give him the benefit of the doubt. I am not so inclined.

I really don't think he said "i am not telling anyone about this because I want to win another championship". I think he probably said "I can't believe Sandusky messed up. I will talk to him to tell him not to do it again because I don't want to hurt my family of coaches".

Based upon Paterno's and Penn State's track record over the many years of his tenure, it's not too difficult to figure out that they all collectively protected the sacred cow football program to the Nth degree, forsaking anything and everything which might derail it. I don't think it had anything to do with loyalty to Sandusky or his coaching staff, it had to do with sweeping anything and everything under the rug. They did it for decades.

And I'm no Penn State hater. My father once got a personal reply to a letter he wrote to Paterno. He was a big fan, and I've got nothing against the school, but c'mon, there were countless incidents involving players, and the few which actually ever made it into the news were always somehow whitewashed, whittled down versions of what actually happened. Nobody ever seemed to get punished or suspended for anything that happened, or if they did it was a wrist slap. I assume we only heard about a few of probably many player conduct and other incidents. Penn State invented athletic program spin control, and they became masters of it.

And then it all came crashing down on them.

What would be helpful in this cause?

Find out what 30 years old claims were actually documented, not hearsay or I told so and so in such intricate detail that so and so was clearly ignoring the problem. Documents. We know several complaints and testimony did make it into the criminal justice system. There were investigations and no charges were filed. Why? Maybe it was Paterno, maybe it was someone else. I have no idea and neither does anyone else who is relying on clickbait news items, which is all this is to me.

You have someone looking for money through the University or their insurance. Whether their claims are justified or not, one must follow due process and a blind item repeating an unvetted claim isn't an appropriate launching pad for an informed opinion.

I can't believe people are still defending Paterno at this point. They're not dragging his name through the mud or going on a witch hunt, he enabled his buddy in the raping by ignoring it so he could win football games. I love the question, "what was he supposed to do?" Go to the ' police obviously, not ignore it or "report" it to his superiors. So disgusting
