If they need to get their mojo back, they can always kick Ryan Boatright's front door down again.

Doesn't Miami have a single mom they can bully? This is much less fun when the target fights back.

I am definitely confused:

Miami President Donna Shalala in a statement released through the university that she is "frustrated, disappointed and concerned" that the NCAA may have compromised the investigation.

"As we have done since the beginning, we will continue to work with the NCAA and now with their outside investigator hoping for a swift resolution of the investigation and our case," Shalala said.

Whose rights did the NCAA trample? I thought Shapiro was the NCAA's witness, the one giving them this info.

NCAA staff worked with his attorney who provided them info--but with Shapiro's knowledge.

So what's the controversy here? What am I missing? Seems the defense attorney was complicit in all of this. Or does the NCAA not want info that comes from a current criminal case? Huh? That's not true. We've seen them step into criminal cases before.

Dan Lebatard just said on his radioa show that there are unsubstantiated rumors that Shapiro's lawyer was on the NCAA's payroll in some capactiy, nothing confirmed yet so who knows if that is true.

edit: not sure why "Lebatard" is being edited when I post.

I expect the results of this investigation to read something like this:

"Mark Emmert is being underpaid by about $2 million per year. Jeff Hathaway will also receive a $1 million bonus just to stick it to UConn."

Ahh, guess that would be it, who in the hell put some of these restrictions in and where are their balls? As far as the whole payroll thing the report is coming from Deadspin that Shapiro's lawyer was on the NCAA's payroll, I'm actually suprised that they admitted wrongdoing on their end, either that or Miami threatened to sue them. Stan Van Gundy is ripping the NCAA to shreds btw on the radio, some good stuff from him.

Basically, what's happening here is that the NCAA has managed to fumble a huge case involving perhaps the most corrupt athletic program* ever to wander down the pike. (* Non-SEC Division.)

This is actually worse than getting smoked by Shabazz Muhammed's people and sending a former UNC football player to investigate and discover that academic fraud involving UNC football was not really any of his business.

Mark Emmert gets paid $2M a year for this insanity, by the way.

Can we request that they investigate the motivations behind instituting a retroactive APR policy that let to the banning of the UConn Mens Basketball team in post season play. I am sure that was legit and not in any way an abuse of power. Not to mention that we were already penalized once (with reduction of scholorships), but hey they are above the law. The NCAA is a joke, which is why the power conferences will start their own governing body once the conferences stop consolidating.

It's like we've been booked by the keystone cops for jaywalking and we are watching them through our barred cell window as they help the bank robbers get away.

Fixed your post.

Might not be completely accurate, but after watching the NCAA scrutinize and re-scrutinize UConn over the past few years and then bungle or ignore most obvious looking transgressions elsewhere, it gets a little frustrating.

Miami is going to get off with triple secret probation and a warning that the next time they get caught cheating, they're REALLY going to be in trouble. The current Miami athletic department and boosters will celebrate with free hookers and blow night in South Beach. They will provide the benefits to all students so the NCAA won't have any authority because it's not an "athletic" scandal.

Seriously, nothing real is going to happen to Miami.

The NCAA just needs to give up. Maybe change their name and relocate to hawaii or something.

This inept organization known as the NCAA needs to get out of the investigative business and hire outside people. Convicted con man can't sell his story to the Miami Herald, can't sell it to local sports radio, finds someone ready to run with the story in Yahoo and the NCAA just falls into line. Two years they have spent looking into this. To date they have found a handful of players that received a few thousand in benefits and punished them with one and two game suspensions. They found players listed in the story that could not be proven to have taken anything. They have harrassed former players by sending them letters that basically state "talk or else", although no one can guess what "or else" actually means. And now they have a compromised investigation because it seems that Shapiro's attorney was connected with them somehow.

They are an utter joke and instead of crying about some alleged rulebreakers getting away with something, everyone should focus their anger on the fact that these idiots actually have the authority to conduct these investigations. They clearly are not up to the task.

That is exactly what they are doing. They don't want to punish Miami (if they really did the investigation would have ended a while ago and 'Tha U' would have gotten the death penalty) so they needed to find a loophole.

I've dedicated my life to walking the peaceful path. I've spent years tirelessly purging my mind of aggressive thoughts. I've rigorously retrained my brain to not act on base animal instincts. I meditate daily. I'd like to think I'm a peaceful man.

...but damn if I'd like nothing more than to punch that f!cker square in the jaw.
