Most of the music I listen to is instrumental as I find a lot of lyrics, especially mainstream, to be grossly over rated and many times, down right stupid and mind numbing...
Thats tough, guys like dylan , cash, guthrie, hank williams never had complex music, but were such gifted song writers. Id still probably lean toward music .
That is a tough choice. I'd have to say music. Prose, poetry and lyrics are great but music is something else. Music appreciation: Imagine a world without music.
I like all kinds of music but for some reason when orchestra music is in the background it is really my favorite. There is quite a bit through the years (Moody Blues, Phil Spector wall of sound (Crystals, Ronettes) and here is one that is a very good example of both lyrics and music with orchestra:
Rhythm vs. melody / harmony vs. sounds vs words all affect different parts of the brain. I do appreciate the greats of songwriting but it's rare for lyrics to really grab my attention on the first listen.
