Seems pretty cut and dried to me.

“Doris Chen's drive on the 17th hole in round 7 came to rest out of bounds," the LPGA said in the statement, according to ESPN. “An outside agency moved her ball back in bounds. Ms. Chen and her caddie were made aware that the ball had been moved. Doris elected to play the ball, which was a wrong ball by definition, from its altered lie. Ms. Chen did not correct her error before teeing off on the next hole, thus resulting in the DQ penalty.”


She knew she was committing a penalty, thought she would not get caught etc. The pressure at these qualifying tournaments must be incredible to get on the tour. I hope she learns from it and is not 'blackballed' or something like that.

In most sports, the rules of the game are violated all the time. Nudge an opponent when she goes up for a rebound. Hold the jersey of a pass rusher. Hold the ball up like you made the diving catch even though it hit the ground first.

It`s about what you can get away with, for the most part.

And if you are penalized, it might be a couple of free throws, a 15 yard penalty, a call that goes against you, all usually forgotten five minutes later.

Golf is different. Totally different culture. You are required to call penalties on yourself, sometimes for the silliest things. The ball moves when you are at address, even though you did not cause it to move. You don`t drop the ball correctly. You don`t place the ball back on the green precisely where you marked it. You ground your club in a bunker that doesn`t look like a bunker.

Your opponent is also required to call a penalty on you if he or she sees something awry, in order to protect the field and the integrity of the game.

In part because there isn`t usually an official right there to make a call, but it is way more than that.

And the penalties are usually draconian, as here. Disqualification is normally the result. Best case is often a two stroke penalty if it is caught in time.

I think that the pro tours have eliminated the practice of allowing fans watching on television to "call in" violations. That is probably a good thing, in my opinion. But still, the players themselves are held to a very high standard of honor.

This is pretty bad since the golfer apparently knew what happened and played the ball any way. She could have asked for a ruling if there was any question, and then gone back to tee it up for her third shot. Her statement about the incident seems disingenuous when compared with the LPGA statement. If (contrary to the LPGA statement) she actually did not know, that would be a grey horse of a different color reputation wise although the disqualification would still stand.

So, I think this stays with her for a long time.

A longer version of events puts this in a somewhat different light. I don't think she set out to cheat. Like she said, she should have gotten an official involved. Me, I'd ban mom from the course from here on out.

From the deadspin article, the caddy says it was not an 'accident' and that she knew it was moved intentionally and I cant see any reason why he would lie. Anyway, I understand the punishment should be severe but I hope she can come back from this.

If this is the result of a "homeowners" report; I'd question the validity. The article is not fully explicit in that regard. It seems to imply that the Caddie and Ms Chen SAW the ball moved and played on. That is much different than an outside source commenting.
In any regard; this is a terribly emotionally bad situation for a great young golfer. While this stain will have a long life of its own, I wish her success in all future tournaments, she has earned that right.

Secondary sources of information/ sightings are unreliable and should be not taken without further investigations. It seems to follow a current trend of conviction then trial. Different impression than the previous Caddie/Chen saw the move article.
Not to worry: Mother need not be banned. If she truly moved the ball, which is not clear, you won't see her, by her choice, ever again. Again, Ms Chen is the victim here and her punishment, while by the rules, is harsh.

That is what I took from the article that I read. At this level she certainly knew the rules and she opted to cheat. Her caddy's statement says it all - “It’s a mess,” he said. “Doris did the wrong thing. I’m just trying to do the right thing, to be fair to all those players at Q-Series who have worked so hard for a whole year.” Maybe during a year off to prep for next year's Q school she might learn how to play by the rules.

While I don't think cheating is commonplace on the tour, it happens. I remember being in the gallery and overhearing a couple of very well known LPGA players talking about the third member of their group, also a very well known player. They were discussing how lucky that player was since every time she hit a shot deep into the boonies her caddy always managed to find her ball. And not only was it found - it was playable.

In fact the story I read said the caddie told the golfer she needed ask for a rules official before playing the ball but she didn't. The golfer was completely on her own on this one.

the punishment for a rules violation in golf is "harsh" for a reason ...... In golf unlike any other sport, the rules are self enforced. In this case she knew she was the beneficiary of fan interference but chose not to enforce the rule to remedy the situation. If she cannot be trusted to play by the rules she risks not being able to play at all.
