Merle was my favorite, perhaps the best $hitkicker of all. His most gutwrenching lyric line: "I turned 21 in prison doin' life without parole," from "Mama Tried."
Merle actually spent time in prison and legend has it that he was an inmate in San Quentin when Johnny Cash performed there.
Merle was an honoree at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010 (along with Paul McCartney and Oprah Winfrey et al.). The honors program included Kris and Willie.
