HBO special tonight on the career of the late Marty Glickman, THE icon of sports radio broadcasting. Olympian, radio voice of N.Y. Giants, Knicks, & Jets. Late in his career, radio voice of the UConn Huskies (broadcast over Connecticut Radio Network). Must see TV.

Marty Glickman is a forgotten factor in the UConn sports renaissance. When UConn had the worst team in the Big East, at least they had the best play-by-play man. Just after he retired (because he felt he couldn't make the drive from NY to Storrs every game), I saw him interviewed on TV. He was asked about UConn's future in BE BB. He said that he didn't feel UConn would do what it took to be able to compete. That brought me to the edge of my chair. Here is a sports legend that told the truth about what was going on. The athletic department was in shambles, a bad joke. Yet the party line was everything was fine. No one had a problem when the part-time AD said that he could see UConn "in the top half of the Big East in 5 years." But here was a respected person who knew what he was talking about saying that wasn't going to happen without big changes. It took Glick (and Earl Kelley) to break UConn out of their slumber.

I'll will always remember being "coached" by Marty Glickman after one of my on air "moments" on WHUS. I never thought he would be listening to WHUS, but he was!!
