Kid would have been a top five pick, probably top three with an outside shot at going #1. Now he's returning, allowing NBA scouts an opportunity to pick apart his game, and likely re-entering the field next year alongside one of the best freshman classes in years. All for a chance to...well you got me. Maybe he just really likes Travis Ford.

Please nobody alert Shabazz of this news.

I don't know how you can't view this as a good thing. Maybe he wants to be the first Pg taken in a loaded draft. It actually makes him look even better. Not to mention more experience that will probably make him more pro ready. Good for him.

Mistake. I get that college is fun, but he puts his entire family at risk with this decision.

Smart still has until the 28th to feel the heat of this decision and change his mind and declare for the 2013 NBA Draft.

I respect Smart for being a "kid" but if I was his family I'd tell him go pro. He's a top 5 pick. Don't pull a Jared Sullinger or worse and lose millions

Sullinger is a skilled, crafty player undersized for his position with a history of back problems. Smart is a physical freak who might have gone second overall even with a suspect jump shot. NBA scouts are in love with him. People can break down the money he foregoes over the long term ad nauseum but whether he stays a year or not he's still going to make more money than he knows what to do with.

Yeah, ask TJ Ford

Good decision. Gets to be a college kid for another year, and he'll likely get more money from T. Boone Pickens than he would have from the NBA.

I can remember flying to Florida my freshman year to begin college (yes, they had airplanes back then). The man sitting next to me was with the US Diplomatic Service and he told me: "These will be the best years of your life. They are likely the only years you will have between your mother and your wife." He was right.
There are plenty of good reasons to stay in school just as there are good reasons to go for the cash and turn pro.

Very true. However, neither you nor that man was offered a guaranteed 7.29 million over 3 years at the ripe old age of 22, assuming he was selected 3rd. To most people, college was the best years of our lives. NBA players aren't most people. That is a lot of money to pass up. I won't judge Marcus Smart, so please don't judge me when I say if that was me or my son, our decision would be slightly different.

As long as he stays healthy, the money will be there. Good for him. I hope the kid does well next season and enjoys himself.

There is more to life than $ Lots of people lose sight of that.

Is it possible he just wants to be better prepared when he gets there and doesn't think he is? I'm not sure why but I'm guessing the young man and his family have their reasons....good for him!!

Any parent that has raised teenagers and young adults can say this about their own kids. However when all is said and done its their decision and the family will respect it and support the kid.

Its not unusual or life threatening, its simply 'life' (and his at that).

Sorry, I missed one "e" with an "o", disastarous. Most people with a strong knowledge of sports would understand the association. Go look at the effects of their individual decisions to go to or stay too long in college.

What does this even mean? You didn't even get the names right.

Very risky, if not poor, business decision. No-brainer, if not excellent, life decision.

I think kids who are locks for the top 5 in a draft should go....unless they are point gaurds with less than two years experience. PG is not a "learn it all on the job" position in the League. He may simply know he isn't quite ready to be an NBA Floor General. Nothing wrong with that.
