At the Irv Black track meet over the weekend Bloomfield High's Demario Gray did seven feet even
in the high jump....fifth best in the country so far this season. He also won the triple jump and the broad jump. Seven feet!

If his academics are in order my bet is that he gets multiple full scholarhip offers...he is a senior.
I hope he gets invited to the track all-star meets in June for some national competition...along with a couple of Ct. girl studs...Sydnee Over [Windsor....headed to Florida State next year] and Precious Holmes [?] from New Haven...don't know where she is headed.

Tommy Meyers of Coventry HS was 4th in the country in the javelin at the Penn Relays with a toss of over 200ft!
He will be a Husky in the fall as a tight end.

I know many of the schools in the south have great track programs - how good is UCONN's track program? It would be nice to see some studs join the team there. I think it's hard with the cold winters - kids can train outdoors all across the south all year long. Gabby Williams is an uber stud in track (high jump) and I look forward to seeing what she does with that when she comes to UCONN...

UConn has become a power in track and at least on the women's side also in cross country. I'm proud to say our NY kids have made major contributions, and sprint and long jump Trisha Hawthorne star for UConn (2011 grad) who held the world best time in the 200m earlier this year came from a nearby town and was one of my town team's chief tormentors when she would regularly beat decent fields by 15-20 meters in the 100m. Both the guys and womens' indoor and outdoor track teams have won recent BEast titles, and women's cross country pulled a huge shocker when it finished 8th at Nationals and well ahead of BEast conference champ Georgetown. Both because of cooler climate for track and the fact that UConn does not recruit much from Africa and abroad like many other top programs, the Huskies are at some disadvantage, but as long as the pipeline from NY keeps pumping Storrs way, UConn will remain strong.

The UConn's Men's T&F team just won its 13th Big East championship. The UConn women finished 2nd to Notre Dame. Both programs have been very successful.

He's also the son of former UConn WBB player Peggy Walsh Myers ('82-'86). Peggy still holds the UConn record for most rebounds in a game (25 I think).

Irv Black was an icon of CT HS track and cross country 30+ years ago.
One negative memory: my junior year in the State Open Cross Country championships after I had crossed the line he grabbed my shoulder and allowed the runner who finished right behind me to move ahead in the chute...so I was credited with 19th when I actually finished 18th...hadn't thought about Mr. Black or that event for many years.

Wow, that is amazing. Still run into the weight man's relay at meets occasionally, but the broad jump takes me back 2nd grade and to the 1880s when they had wheelbarrow races, tug-of-wars, three-legged-runs, and wall climbing events at some of the early track meets.
