The governor just gave the state the largest tax increase in history. Then told towns they were no longer allowed to tax motor vehicles because we need tax relief. Many towns are losing millions of dollars in revenues. The idea that the people of CT would spend $200 million for a new stadium less than 15 years after dropping $100 million for a new stadium is beyond ridiculous. Unfortunately the people who lecture us on the "culture" of college football are not in any way tuned into the culture of CT.
Jackson St already played in a 60,000 seat stadium, the state is set to make a ton of money off the sale of the stadium and land to be developed. They are opening up a SMALLER stadium with a dome so that it has multiple uses. Imagine HFD's outrage if we upgraded to 50,000 instead of a planned 60,000. Yet they are downgrading in size, and turning it into a multi-use facility for their basketball programs among other uses. Of course HFD would love for us to have a dome, that our 3 major programs shared, along with concerts and other shows right? Right?! Riiiiiight.
In 60 years, when our stadium is outdated, when we've developed a couple generation of fans of bigtime football, and we have improved roads and highways to campus to make it suitable for something this size, then maybe we can think about criticizing our leaders for not doing the same.
