Every year has been in Surf City for us as well. You'd be amazed at how the island has grown the pst 20 years. When we first started going the Island was desolate. No supermarkets besides the IGA, no wings, waves, etc. and probably close to half the island was open property to build on. Words can't even do it justice. All that devlopement has come in probably the last 10-11 years. We just came back from our third year in a row! Topsail Beach the first year, Surf City the last 2. Except for a day trip to Wilmington, we went the whole week without getting into the car. Walk to restaurants, pubs, and stores. Sit on the deck and watch the kids in the surf ... can't be much better than that!
Yeah, it's great that everything is close. You won't find any overwhelmingly great food on the Island, but Beauchaines is pretty good. We usually head to Wilmington to walk the river, the downtown area, and grab a good meal once while we're there as well. Back in 1996 or 97 my parents had the opportunity to buy the condo we use stayed in for 70,000 dollars, but with3 kids to put through college they thought better of it. Unfortunately for them, at the peak of the housing market in 07-08 that condo was worth mid 500's. Last year when we were there, there were people shark fishing..they would kayak out and drop the line. They caught 2 5 foot sharks over the course of the week.

Have you been to the Green Turtle in Sneads Ferry? My wife and I used to enjoy the views.
