For churning this up again about the Steubenville assault(s). Don't go to this link if you are going to be sick. It's OT but it highlights how far out-of-wack an entire community of so-called adults can be pulled by a desire to feel good about themselves through a lousy HS Football team. Rancid.

I blame ND for giving me the time to read this tonight.

I spent 2 degrees studying what it means to be human because humans are fascinating animals. That being said the nonsense in the link posted above makes me understand why some people prefer dogs.

Being a biologist, I used to be dismissive of social sciences, but I think there's value to using sociological approaches to group dynamics such as in the Steubenville situation. Seems that whenever there's any kind of whistleblower, could be in a company, a community, or a government, there's an almost tribal urge to shun them (or worse).

As a social scientist (anthropology, archaeology, geography) I too have been dismissive of social sciences. My studies focused largely on evolutionary ecology, human ecology and material culture. We're still animals with an instinct for self-preservation, and unfortunately for most people adherence to larger ideals like rules, laws, common decency and fair play become very tenuous when that survival is threatened.

I don't advocate violence, but if that girls father was to do some very bad things to those idiots, he'd be well within his rights IMO.

Disgusting this is just as bad as the Penn State situation if not worse. They need to disband the football program, take down the goal posts, tear the grass off the field. Vacate wins during the time period when the rappings occured. The FBI needs to step in on this and take serious action. Lock up these kids and the higher ups who were involved in this.

I was reading the Twitter page of a close friend of the victim. What's really sad is how jaded these kids are. This kind of mob mentality and reflexive bullying is such an ingrained defensive mechanism to their mindset that it's easy to forget these are just kids. They've been damaged and their parents and town are dysfunctional. It seems more like the parents have lost any real sense of self-esteem and have their egos and identities wrapped up in this team. Ethics be damned. Many of these kids have a lousy homelife and there's probably an economic component involved. The victim probably should have died after what happened to her that night but I can't bring myself to think she's "lucky" to be alive.

Accidentaly deleted photo and video evidence Sheriff? Told them to wipe their phones coach? They all need to be gone yesterday.

The Town started it's own information campaign... this is just ugly on all accounts.

Within his rights as a Father! Maybe not the laws of the state. With the right jury maybe he wouldn't be convicted. I would have great difficulty convicting him!

Breaking the code of silence in the equivalent of Penn State for blind allegiance to a football program, with involved parties in positions of law enforcement and the county attorney will take some very brave and/or pissed off indivduals. This is a tough call for the victims parents if no other people come forward. This is a very tangled web and law enforcement from outside the county is going to have to bring down the hammer.
