The 9th pick in the MLB draft was Stanford RHP Mark Appel. Is he related to Jayne?

He was actually the 8th pick and no, they aren't related. :)

When I heard on the MLB draft broadcast that Mark Appel had gone to Stanford for college, I thought that he HAD to be related to Jayne, probably her brother. I must say I'm astonished.

But I am happy that the Pittsburgh Pirates (assuming that they can sign him) will get such an apparently talented pitcher.

Why is this thread "OT"? It seems to me that the apparent connection to Jayne qualifies it as on-topic.

Oops, 8th pick. Thanks. I think he was projected to go at 4 or 5. He's 6'5" and looks a little like Jayne.

I thought it was borderline. Or maybe I was too lazy to type Semi-OT. I thought they were related too but couldn't find confirmation on the web. They are from the same general area in the East Bay!

My mother was a big fan--Beat 'Em Bucs!

Bummer he didn't go No. 1 as some had predicted. Stanford would have had the No. 1 pick in football, women's basketball and baseball. How about that for a trifecta? Granted, two out of three ain't so bad...

And that they can't spell on the west coast.

Mark had a tough outing vs. Florida State. I didn't think that this was a great Stanford team, compared with some in the recent past, but losses to FSU by 17-1 and 18-7 really surprised me.

What Saki said. :)

Surprised he didn't go higher and wish he went to a better team.

The pirates MAY be building.

I live in the D.C. area, where the Nats have been a doormat mostly since they moved from Montreal. Gradually, they have added young talent and become a decent team. Currently, they have the second best record in the majors, the NL strikeout leader (Strasburg), the NL leader in lowest opposing batting average (Gonzales), an All-Star Gold Glover (R. Zimmerman), and a guy who has been compare to Mantle, Mays, and Kaline (Harper).

Maybe the Pirates can do the same.

Yes, plus they have that kid Harper. :D Although Trout presently has the best rookie numbers.

the Pirates have signed some good players over the last 20 yrs, but got little results. I hope they can turn it around some day.

Small market teams have trouble holding on to talent. It is more complicated than that, but payroll is a factor.

Yeah, Harper--the one being compared to Mantle, Mays, and Kaline.

He has rare qualities--power, speed, and arm; aggressive yet patient at the plate; old school but not old fashioned.

A month ago, Cole Hamels welcomed him to the majors by hitting him with a pitch. Later in the inning, he stole home.

The kid got a GED at 16 so he could play in a league with wooden bats. He is really exciting.
