NBC carries the track and field qualifying tonight at 9:00. At 9:50 the 200 meters final will be run....Felix/Tarmoh/Richards-Ross and other really good sprinters. I'm guessing the coverage ends at 10:00 with the NBC announcers chasing down Felix and Tarmoh after the race for their decision about the 100 meters tie. Prediction: Felix makes the 200 team...along with Sanya...Tarmoh doesn't....Felix gives up her spot in the 100.

BTW: in Jamaica Yohan Blake won the 100 meters in their qualifying in 9.75...Bolt finishing second.
Blake has run a 19.26 in the 200 with only Bolt's WR 19.19 better. Unless the Jamaicans mess up the baton exchanges the USA will have a tough time beating them in the 4 by 1 relay. The USA has shown they are fairly adept at dropping the baton themselves in past big meets.

I know you're old enough to have seen this... the most fantastic relay I ever watched was 1964, Tokyo, with Bob Hayes running anchor. It was the best performance I have ever witnessed. The only comparisons might be Michael Johnson's 200m in Atlanta, or Usain Bolt's last Games. I'm eagerly awaiting the finals in London.

Bob Hayes made up a substantial deficit by running at faster than 100 meter world record time. That was awesome. It's on YouTube and still hard to believe. He looks like Secretariat pulling away.

Michael Johnson in his golden shoes almost made time stand still. He was covering ground faster than any man had done.

Bolt is insanely fast. Or Usainly fast.

An impressive race.

The men's gymnastics have been very touching with the family angles.

Evelyn Ashford ran a pretty impressive anchor leg in 1988(might have been 1984) when she made up a sizable deficit.
But, yes, Bob Hayes' anchor leg in 1964 was unbelievable. Bob Hayes, in his day, was unbelievable.

I just watched his race and he looked like was a bundle of raw strength, power and speed. I don't know all that much about track (had some friends who were on the track team in HS) but his form did not even look all that great. The best 100m form I can recall seeing was Carl Lewis. Almost everyone else in the world, even at that level, slows down slightly toward the end. Carl's form was such that he could maintain his speed and appear to be pulling away. Bob Hayes seemed to have a good bit of lateral motion in the hips/legs even in the mid and late parts of the race. Guys like Lewis were just a pure, straight line of motion. If Bob Hayes had that kind of form I bet he could have gone 9.9 or better.

But Carl Lewis would have never survived the hits on the football field like Hayes did.

Bob Hayes may have been the biggest reason for teams to play zone in the secondary. If he could beat the Russian sprinter, he could beat the Giants' and Redskins' defensive backs. Probably, that was the greatest gap in NFL history between the fastest guy and everyone else. He averaged an outstanding 20 yards per catch for a career.

Felix ran 21.69 not 19.69. World record is 21.34. Felix looked just great!
