I'm a little sketchy on it but the Air Forces organization was deemed necessary to separate the strategic air forces from under the Army Command structure which saw little use for air power beyond ground support. So I guess you can say both answers are right, though I suspect AAF as the actual WWII  war fighting is probably more right than not.
