2. to the .. North Pole?
3. Context is important here, as during almost all of our lifetimes, the US has been a predominate world power. In 1907, pre-WW1, the US was regarded as, essentially, a regional power. And, as this was pre-airpower, the way a nation demonstrated its' international capacity was by sea power. The US President - Teddy? - sent a powerful US fleet, composed of our newest and most impressive warships, on a world cruise, as a demonstration of American might. The warships were largely painted white (remember, pre-A/C, so, anything you can do to lessen the impact of traveling in tropical waters). Ergo, the Great White Fleet.
5. UFO investigation, I believe.
6. Calvin & Hobbes
7. In McLean's "American Pie", I believe the lyrics referring to "the jester on the stage" is regarding Mick Jagger & the Stones
11. ".. is a crook. Well, I am not a crook!" Richard Nixon, re: Watergate

1. Loosely translated, Il Trittico means "the tryptich." It's the overarching title of three one-act operas composed by Puccini. Gianni Schicchi is one of the three, but I forget the names of the other two (or maybe I never knew what they are).
