NCor - A really interesting history, especially so if you can find a historical record from a non PC perspective. As with most history, things are not always as clear as they seem.

NCor - A really interesting history, especially so if you can find a historical record from a non PC perspective. As with most history, things are not always as clear as they seem. Correct! Because western history tends to be written from the perspecive of the white society who will be reading these books. It is better these days but when I was in grade and high school the history books portrayed the western white man as the white hat an all other as the black hats. The Professors in college selected history books with more balance (not easy then) or they lectured from a balance perspective.
An search yielded these.
1. This one specifically says wealthy white sugar growers http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/hawaii/program.html
2. http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/database/article_display.cfm?HHID=189
3. http://books.google.com/books/about/Hawaii_s_story_by_Hawaii_s_queen_Liliuok.html?id=QrTCvcy0sE4C
4. http://theautry.org/explore/exhibits/suffrage/liliolder_full.html
5. http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/liliuokalani/hawaii/hawaii.html

The winners write the history books! Contrary to Herodotus' efforts.

NCor - I read the your 1st reference and it's typical of the "one perspective" history.

Following her succession to the throne after her brother's death in 1891, Lili'uokalani would work secretly to frame a new constitution that would restore power to native Hawaiians.

I believe that statement is wrong. Lili'u was trying to revoke what some call the "Bayonet Constitution" which forced a constitutional monarchy form of government. Her intent was to restore absolute power to the monarchy.

In her own words - If he believed in the divine right of kings, and the distinctions of hereditary nobility, it was not alone from the prejudices of birth and native custom, but because he was able to perceive that even the most enlightened nations of the earth have not as yet been able to replace them with a ruling class equally able, patriotic, or disinterested. Had she not attempted to regain power for the monarchy Hawaii's history may have neen quite different. There is some evidence (real or constructed) that her intent was to rewrite the constitution by force.

There is no question that white businessmen led the move to overthrow Lili'u but what most histories ignore were the issues that prompted the overthrow and that these white businessmen had at least some support from native Hawaiians.

This isn't an area where I have a lot of knowledge. I spent a couple of afternoons in the state library after taking a tour of the Iolani Palace. I did find enough to convince me that the facts of what happened have been muddled by political correctness.

So, I shall try to complete stuff now.

14. A few of you cite the 18th, but only K9 submits the 21st as the repeal.

15..VTC & K9 capture the classic, As Time Goes By.

16..Woman elected U. S. Senator.

17..Well, VAUC (see him), I didn't say there was a huge difference.

18..Pinot has Richard Cory.

19..Applause for K9 with "Transportation".

20..Thomas Jefferson's grandchild, the first baby born in the White House.

21..I will not try to moderate the VTC/NCor exchange over Queen Lil. You sort it out.

22..The Checkers(dog) Speech. Rbny & K9

23..Knights lives there. NCor knows by accident Lower Jerseyites.

24..Several different directions here. My wave length would require you to know I referred to men's basketball
and the elimination of an undefeated squad, leaving Murray St. as the last w/o a loss.
Pinot & K9. Still, the choice of Baylor isn't really wrong, just a different wave length

25..Had I been thinking of Drew Pearson, the NFL receiver, then VAUC's multiple answers shows how badly worded my question
was. But since I am referring to D. P, the muckraking DC columnist, there is only one right answer--his protege, Jack
Anderson, who took over in the 70's. Rbny is with it.

A pleasure, as it is now, and at the hour of my joining Etta James to sing "At Last".

A man of taste and distinction. Etta had golden pipes! I happen to be listening to Little Walter's "Juke." He could really make the harmonic wail. Muddy Waters had some of the best playing for him in addition to Little Walter. His "Got My Mojo Working" featured both Paul Oscher (early 70s) and James Cotton (mid-late 60s). I give it Oscher by a whisker. How this song's arrangements changed over the course of 40 years is fascinating.
