OT - Florida starting QB suspended for season

If it is something he purchased over the counter then I can't understand why he wouldn't have verified that he can use it. I heard former Dolphin (and Gator, strangely enough) Channing Crowder say on his show that before he took anything, he would hand it over to the trainers to have them verify that it didn't contain anything on the banned substances list. I have to imagine that a major college football program could do the same for one of their players. What a total screw up by all involved.

Or he just got caught using steroids.

It's possible, but I don't jump to the worst conclusions, especially when it comes to this stuff. Either way, he's out so it may never matter.

That is the mantra in all programs... before you take anything - have the training staff approve it. This is on Grier if he didn't follow policy. Tough way to learn a lesson if the story as presented is true.

Damn OTC @ GNC....;)

No surprise here, but apparently Gators QB Will Grier will say he took something from GNC that he didn't know included a banned substance

Based on what McElwain is saying, it was an NCAA test on Grier so he’ll be gone until this time next year.

Gone for a year over a Pro-Hormone supplement (Ligandrol) that is legal, but banned by the NCAA. That is a rough one, but they play LSU this week so "thanks NCAA"

He should've checked though. Any supplement with the suffix "androl" is probably an obvious no no. Out a full calendar year, meaning he misses half of next season as well. Seems harsh.

I'll make it easy for you, he's lying.

Maybe, but the claim is that he tested for Ligandrol, which is a legal "almost steroid" sold at GNC. It is not an illicit drug, but would definitely be performance enhancing. Unless you're saying Crowder is lying, which I'd probably believe given that he's nuts.

Being in the strength & conditioning field, I have come in contact and worked with a number of college athletes. Although I don't dabble in nutrition and supplements, I do have a basic knowledge and have often been asked by clients about various products. I personally don't recommend supplements to my athletes. They can get everything they need through proper nutrition. If one of my athlete's chooses to use supplements, I always have them clear it with the head trainer at their school. There are so many substances that can be purchased over the count that the NCAA considers banned. Our first thought when we hear "banned substance" always goes to steroids, but a simple diuretic product, used to speed up metabolism or boost energy could be considered illegal and result in a post test result. Most collegiate S&C programs have a list of NCAA banned substances and distribute that to all their athletes. My guess is Grier (and the Florida S&C staff) knew what he was taking and didn't expect to be subject to the NCAA's random testing policy. Tough break but a lesson other college athletes should learn from.

Someone posted on their board Saturday they were going to lose a big player for Steroids. So clearly someone is lying about something -because the coaches claim they found out Sunday and it was an NCAA test.

I don't think that is correct. He is listed at 190 lbs in his 24/7 recruiting profile and at 200 lbs last year on the Florida roster and 201 lbs this year.

I have no idea, just going off of that article, but the claims that he weighs 215 now are from his own twitter posts. UF says he came in closer to 170 lbs when they redshirted him, which would be listed as "190" in high school. He's bragging in August about putting on a lot more than 12 pounds.

He is nuts, but he's pretty damn funny, even for a Gator.

I am surprised that we don't hear about more suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs.
