On his first day as AD, Josh Whitman fired quasi-interim head coach Bill Cubit.

This really stinks for the program that they are going to poach a coach from. I hope we don't hear BDs name in this. B1G job in decent recruiting area. I doubt anything happens but boy it would suck for whatever team gets impacted. Here you are prepping for spring practice and all other head coaching jobs are filled, then this happens.

I understand it's new AD's first day on job but timing is just bad. The fact that he immediately fired him means that he already has the coach picked and ready, in my opinion.

Weird. Stinks for 2016 commits.

That was my first reaction until the Lovie Smith hire news came out... Who wouldn't want to play for a NFL coach at the P5 level? Izon Pulley's probably licking his chops right about now..

I hope Lovie can get the recruiting thing down pat. If he can UI becomes a player in the B1G.

Lovie Smith? He's a lot more Charlie Weiss than Pete Carroll. They'd be better served by a dynamic college coach.

Smith is a much better football coach than Weiss.

Love Smith is getting the 3rd highest Asst coaching salary pool in the B1g :

Coaching Search News, Notes & Quotes - March 8:
- Scout.com reports Lovie Smith’s assistant salary pool at Illinois will be $4 million.
That would be third in the Big Ten based on last year’s salaries, behind only Michigan and Ohio State.

By comparison, Bill Cubit got $2.4 million in assistant salary pool. Illinois will need that extra money if they’re looking to hire coaches away from other jobs at this time of year. But couple this with Smith’s average $3.5 million salary, this is an unprecedented investment in the coaching staff at Illinois.

The Lovie Smith hire just doesn't sit well with me. Heard him getting interviewed on ESPN radio and it just sounded like the type of scenario where he wanted to settle in to a secure job and ease himself into retirement. He referred to his decision being in part based on being "at the beginning of the fourth quarter of his career." Personally, I never want a guy taking the helm at my program who's on the back nine. Sure, it can work out in some circumstances (maybe one could argue Bill Snyder's return to K State) but usually ends in disaster. College football coaching isn't the type of thing one can do half-heartedly.

Much better head coach for sure. But he was also was the coach for the Bears and did pretty well...that's different than if he coached say, the Falcons. I think this is a good move for Illinois. They have everything they need to be a major player in college football.

I agree that this may not be ideal..but....there is plenty of talent in Ill and his name will really help recruiting. He needs to hire a good staff (probably why the large staff budget), but on name only he should start getting talent to Illinois.
