Thankfully, I'll be focusing on the games featuring Italian teams. I haven't heard who's announcing those games, but I would love it if the games were on BeIN, where the announcers would be like this:
You've gotta love Ray Hudson!!! ("As electrifying as a hair dryer thrown into a bathtub, my friend!")

I just don't understand why some people dislike Gus Johnson. He was one of my favorite play by play guys for college bball. When he moved to football I didn't think it would work but I was wrong. Apparently he's putting in time studying the game, so he can gradually do more games and if he's ready he'll be doing the 2018 World Cup. Maybe the hardcore soccer fans have an argument that it's better to stick with announcers who grew up in the game but on the other hand Fox wants to bring in new viewers. I wouldn't bet against him.

The problem I have with the clip you just linked (and maybe what many soccer fans have) is that he's calling the game as if he was a hockey announcer, or better yet, a radio announcer. By that, I mean that his lips are in constant motion. In contrast, most soccer announcers will just give you the names of the players with the ball, and sometimes followed with little snippets. For example, "Cristiano Ronaldo......now Sergio Ramos......Ramos finds Benzema......still Benzema.....STILL BENZEMA..............GOAL!!! Cristiano Ronaldo!!! (then the color commentator) He made a splendid pass in the box to a streaking Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid now lead 2-0!"
The reasons for this are simple; we're currently watching the game so we don't need a second by second by second recap. Also, the quiet breaks allow you to hear the crowd, which is almost certainly making a lot of noise or singing some team-related song. The best soccer announcers know this, and it's why ESPN typically brings in the English to do the important games. People like Adrian Healey, Ian Darke, etc...

Announcers don't bring in new viewers. And I'm not a hardcore soccer fans. I'm still a casual fan, but I find myself watching more and more. Bad announcers turn off viewers. Gus is great in hoops, he knows the game instinctivly. Dave O'Brien was a disaster at soccer and Gus will be too. I won't bet against him, Fox has invested too much already. They won't admit a mistake. At least this announcement gives me time to learn Spanish so I can watch the games on Telemundo.
Because soccer is often televised first thing saturday morning I'm usually doing other things with the game on in the background and I'm listening to it. Since there are no commercials, new viewers may likely do the same thing as there's no chance to use the commercial breaks to walk away and take care of things....like your kids. I like that clip because I'd be able to follow the action without watching.

I wonder who does the feed for Celtic fans in Scotland today. That will be a match where the anouncers can take a break. We'll know what's going on from the crowd.
