A bold and/or provocative interpretation, I bet UMass people might be less than thrilled to read this. But if it's true then they know firsthand. Note the use of qualifiers - "may be ready... may have begun"http://ajerseyguy.com/?p=7396
UMass football approaching crossroads

There are more and more indications that the MAC is not thrilled at having UMass as a partial member (no basketball) and that it may be ready to tell the Minutemen that it is time to either commit totally or find a new league to play its football games. A two-year clock for making a decision to commit totally may have begun.

If UMass chooses to stick with a split football and basketball membership, the football program will be in a crisis mode that might bring it down completely.

That may be the pessimistic view of the world, but it remains a very distinct possibility

C-USA has agreed to play in newly created bowls in Boca Raton & the Bahamas? Wonder how big are the stadia that are involved.

Nassau has a newly renovated soccer stadium that seats 15k but has plenty of room for bleacher seating It's 10 minutes away from Paradise Island.

At least the University wouldn't have to eat a ton of tickets thus maybe they can make some money instead of losing money when they go to a bowl game. Bahamas not a bad place to go in early Jan.

question, would a school pay for the passports of the players who do not have one, which is most I assume?

UMass very likely has a better overall future than just about all the MAC schools.

They probably would... I remember reading that USF did for International Bowl.

UConn avoided the issue by flying to Buffalo and busing across the border.

Don't you still need a passport when driving into Canada?

I disagree. Blaudschun is right that UMass is at a crossroads. They really need to figure out a conference strategy. MAC doesn't need them for football as they have 13 football schools right now, so they have the power to force them to join.

Plus, what is the future for UMass football? It is not being supported and it is unlikely to get a major conference invite. When UMass decided to upgrade football, they probably hoped for a Big East invite in the future. Sure, maybe they can get an AAC invite, but I doubt the AAC is looking to invite a weak football school with little fan or state support. Before UMass spends more money on football, they should really think about the future.

The AAC almost never invites weak football programs with little support. It's been months since that happened.

Honestly, what does UMass bring to the table? Strong football program? No. Strong basketball program? No. Strong fan and/or state support? No. Strong recruiting grounds? No. Any athletic history? Not really.

I know whaler was alluding to Tulane, but at least Tulane is a top school that was once part of the SEC and in a strong recruiting area. Realistically, Tulane > UMass.

It wasn't needed then, it is now. So the question is a good one. They can be very expensive when needed in less than 5-6 weeks.

Yes. But they would probably confiscate them afterwards.

About $100. $200 if you need within a day or two.

There are a few things here that I think are relevant and interesting. First off as an academic institution, UMass is head and shoulders waist, legs and feet above some of the glorified high schools in the AAC (Hi Memphis, where you can apply online and get an immediate acceptance!!!Rumor has it that a dog was once accepted). So in that sense they have a higher upside. Athletically they are not that great, but they aren't hopeless I don't think. For football they need to move games back to campus and market to western and central Massachusetts and forget about Boston. Their alumni in Boston have no tradition of being UMass football fans so they need to cultivate the current students to be fans when they are alumni. that is the direct opposite of what they are currently doing. Play one game a year in Boston either at BC or at Foxborough, but keep most back on campus.

I also love his idea that BC and UConn play a season ending game. Return some juice to New England football that has been missing since Holy Cross, Harvard and Yale all downgraded. And if BC and UMass don't agree to open the season every Labor Day, we should make that deal. So we'd open the season against UMass, play a CAA game, then play a national team, go into the AAC schedule, and end the season on the first weekend in December with BC. You could always drop the CAA game and play a 2nd national program if the situation was right.

Before June of 2009 you only needed a passport if flying. A photo ID worked via ground.

Just not true. I have crossed the border extensively into Montreal and into Toronto. You need a Passport or one of the new enhanced Drivers licenses. Not so much with the Canadians ... but they have gotten tougher. The American side is the issue.

Not sure where I'm wrong Pudge?

"As of June 1, 2009 all U.S. citizens returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean via land or sea borders must provide a US Passport Card or US Passport. Previously, individuals crossing land or sea borders in the United States could show a drivers license and birth certificate; however, after June 1, 2009 only government approved documentation is accepted."

And ... I am telling you IN PRACTICE it was extraordinarily hard to get through the US border, by car, with just a picture ID. It has been that way for a decade. The Millenium guy in Seattle in 1999 ... and then in subsequent year. I have gone at least twice a month for 14 years. My reading of that statement is that they were codifying what the US Immigration Service was doing

Pudge is right that a driver's license makes it very hard to get through.
That being said, yes they are still accepting driver's licenses if you don't have your passport, but they might put you through the ringer. It's unofficial policy.

Then there's the NEXUS card. That's what I have. You just pass right on through. I flew into Toronto from Europe 2 weeks ago, bypassed the 2 hour wait for Customs, had my eyes scanned by a machine, and passed through without speaking to anyone or being stopped by a human being.
