God, no. Just once, years ago....and it is still slick as a wet saddle.

I have to do one of my cast irons fairly frequently ( because of my wife who despite my warnings, fails to abide by cast iron law : 1) make sure the pan is heated to the temp you want before throwing food in and 2) soaking over night in soap and and then to compound not drying it good either. .... it's why she's is forbidden from using the old one)

I've brought it back from the dead a bunch of times using a hack similar to your post.

- Heat up coconut oil
- Dump some kosher salt in it and scrub out the spots
- clean it out of salt
- put a layer of vegetable oil and put it in the oven for an hour or so

All that can be avoided by cleaning and drying immediately
