skipping ahead to 16, seeing as how it's a bear question - at its' nadir (1970's and 80's, I think), the Yellowstone grizzly population may have dropped under 180 bears. Now, that seems like a lot, but, when you factor in gender, age, and the fact that sow grizzlies breed roughly every 3 years, that means that there were about 15 receptive females in any given year. You lose, literally, a handful of those bears to auto accidents, poaching, other mortality, and it makes for a very fragile population - and a very narrow genetic profile. Being an apex omnivor/predator almost always means Mother Nature programs in a small population with slow reproductive rate. In Yellowstone, during this time frame, the bear population was teetering on the edge of elimination.

The good news is, the bear has bounced back quite well. In the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, which includes Grand Teton, surrounding National Forest land, etc. - grizzlies, particularly adult males, have large territories - estimates run to at least 700 bears, and could be approaching Chief's top number of 1,000. In fact, the states in which Yellowstone exists (Idaho, Montana, and primarily Wyoming) are campaigning to have the grizzly reclassified as no longer endangered, so as to permit hunting and to loosen development restrictions that currently protect bear habitat.

That's enough for now - let's have some other folks take a shot at some of these!

15..You'd find it immensely helpful to recall, "Tie me kangaroo down".

11..It's about spreading wings.

4..Originally from Mongolia

9..There's some foliage north of San Francisco named after John ____. If you get that, and then you drop 1 letter, you got our leopard.

6..The pygmy lives in Borneo, which, you'll admit, is way down the road from Africa. Now the full name of the foliage in #9 may help you with the elephant. Maybe.

20..Ringed is fine. For the 2nd, think Orthodox men.

25..G_____, E______, A____

10..Like last time, Pinot dismisses this relative.

21..Kind of a diminutive of another name for the male.

I can't help with the clued answers, except the obvious that John's last name was Muir. Muir Woods. Beautiful, or at least it was 20 or so years ago when we went.

I will agree with:
4 -Giraffe, I'm pretty sure, but zebra if not.
18 - Capybara. One of the "symbols" of our local zoo. Some people have tried to keep them as pets. They do not - repeat not - make good pets. I always wonder - why?
19 - Don't know about wild boars in AZ but we do have Javalina, that look like one. Another species that some folks find cute. They rummage in trash, some folks feed them and even let them in the house. Problem is, if they don't get fed, they get destructive.
