It's the middle of the night, and a man's bladder gets him up. He stumbles to the bathroom and turns on the light. By doing so, he creates a cones-& rods clashing and is more likely than at most other times to miss his target. Why doesn't he just sit?

Can you think of other cultural oddities/irrationalities to offer? (And no, insisting that you DO sit is not helpful.)

Your reference to the wakeup in the middle of the night reminded me of a "Word Fugitive" (name of a book, formerly a feature of The Atlantic magazine). A writer sought a word for those times during the night that you go to the kitchen, open the fridge, stare at the contents, then shut the door. As I recall, a good submission to describe this repetitive habit was fridgety.

Some Boneyarders have difficulty with homonyms; e.g., your/you're, there/their/they're, led/lead, etc. Among the clever coinages to describe this difficulty were nononym and illiteration.

Surely other Boneyarders (I include myself) have written an email, referred to an attachment, then hit "send" but forgot to attach the intended attachment. Coinages I liked were sends of omission, absentee-mail, nonsendquitur, and deficit sending. But perhaps the best was forgetfileness.

Now, back to the theme of the OP. That novelty garden fountain (standing, not sitting) may be called a fig"urine."

My question here Chief is why turn on the light?

Even if you don't miss the target there is still splash back and atomized urine floating all over the room. Four physicists at Brigham Young U (known as the Wizz Kids) did extensive research on this matter. What I don't understand is why don't they install urinals in home bathrooms?

Regarding other cultural oddities: Why make the bed?

Is that another reason to sit down?

That reminds me...I think it was an Alan King bit, talking about his efficient wife. When Alan went to the bathroom in the wee hours,
he came back to find the bed made.
