According to @RCummingsTBO Tampa Bay Buccaneers have cut former #UConn QB Dan Orlovsky

"Orlovsky's release is a little more curious. The Bucs haven't signed a quarterback, and now only have Josh Freeman and former Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber under contract. Meanwhile, the Bucs have been preaching more competition at every position including quarterback. They must have someone in line they want to sign, but it's not at all clear who they will be."

They loved Dan down there. That's surprising. Maybe the Colts will take him back.

The guy finds a job no problem. Probably money $$. Gets paid a lot to be a backup.

This clears $1.5 million of cap space for the Bucs.

If they re-sign him at the vet minimum ($840,000 for an seven-nine year vet) he would only count $550,000 against the cap if he is one of the top 51 paid players.

Hard to know what the Bucs are thinking or if there will be a spot for Dan when the music ends.

Managing total QB salaries is going to be a newer skillset for most teams.

With the new rules regarding head injuries and mandatory sit down times, teams who want to win need two or three competent QB's on the roster. Finding players who can come in mid-game and execute the game plan or who can prep for the next game on two days notice are going to be hot commodities.

Backup QB's and Backup backup QB's are going to become hot commodities like middle relievers who can switch from spot starter to long reliever and soak up 80-100 innings per season.

started a thought... would the NFL expand the roster to add and allow a few more players and ensure on game day concussions don't decimate the team?

thinking a extra QB, extra LB?

The NFL is going to have to do something regarding roster size. To me it should still be up to the individual teams to figure out how to manage their roster. Maybe increase practice team roster to 10 and give teams until Saturday at noon to make roster moves.

Lots of options. Only non-option is not doing something.

My sense is this is the way they are going... need the $$$ for a bigger move. I think Shady keeps him.

I'm pretty sure the same thing happened when Orlovsky was in Houston b/c his existing contract was determined to be too much $ for the team in the backup QB role. Dan is the football programs's version of Kevin Ollie. A hard worker, with the basic tools to compete, and therefore a survivor in the pro's. He's got a couple more years left in him, IMO. Keep plugging away and preparing, and showing up when needed and giving quality performances, and he'll be in the league for a while yet.

Bucs re-sign #Dan Orlovsky. Can't believe he's going into his 9th NFL season . Actually I can. Great arm, great guy.

Doesn't he lurk Palantine's posts??

I wonder if he wants to get into coaching.
If I am recalling correctly, he'd be glad to come back to UConn.

Orlovsky should have went somewhere they really could use a QB. Like Oakland.

I think the Josh Freeman honeymoon is close to over in Tampa Bay. His play has really regressed the last couple of years. If Dan can hold onto the #2 spot, I think he will see some real opportunities.

Dan is in a great situation. He carries a clip board and gets paid hundreds of thousands of dollars (he has made millions). He has already qualified for an NFL pension and the league hasn't beaten the snot out of him. He has stayed pretty healthy. IN Oakland he would just get himself killed. Besides, it will be very tough for him to make the jump to starter. But if he can fill in and win a couple of games he could have a ten year career.

Tampa re-signed him. At the end of the day, Olovsky is exactly what he is: a journeyman 5th rounder who has managed an NFL career 3x longer than the average. He's made millions for holding a clipboard. Akili Smith should be so lucky.

They key to the backup position is above the shoulders. A backup has to be able to learn and flourish in mutiple systems, plus provide scout team value by being able to mimic the opposing QB that week. That means lots of film room study and an ability to quickly grasp offensive systems. Some of the higher picks that don't make it fail precisely because they can't handle the mental aspects of running one offense, let alone several. Physical talent isn't enough. Dan has done a nice job. At some point, I think being well traveled helps, as you've actually played in several systems.

Check the account. It's Adam "Schefler" not Adam Schefter. Fake.

Ha... thanks!! Damn multi-tasking. Never cross-checked. Bad boy.
