Starting in 2014 the Orange Bowl will pit the ACC champ vs ND or highest rated team between B1G or SEC. Looks like the BE is gonna be left behind rather quickly in the new system and that's bad news for UConn. Less money means less power and prestige and lower on recruiting totem poll.

Yes there are three more bowls but does anyone really think these bowls will choose a NBE team over a SEC, Big 12, or B1G team if given the option?? The BE is now in the same boat as C-USA, MAC, and MWC when it comes to the postseason. Not good.

If the new tv deal is bad one has to wonder is Boise and SDSU decide to not come along and stay out west.

Not good outlook.....

It does look like things are segregating along TV network lines, so the NBE champ may end up in an NBC New Year's Day bowl with difficulty finding a strong opponent.

Still, the NBE will be better than anything Boise and SDSU can get on their own. Not worried about the NBE failing but I agree, it's possible the other 5 conferences might freeze us out of big postseason money.

The dumb part about this is that ND is already playing 5 games against the ACC. The chances for a rematch against a team they've already played in the last couple of years is fairly good.

OBowl wants to expand its selection pool

And the Orange Bowl, which has been force-fed Big East champions without qualifying BCS rankings, is delighted to have the security of teams from power conferences such as the Big Ten and SEC and a BCS qualifying ND team in the group.
But it also wants some wiggle room– let’s say that in a Cinderella type season a Louisville or Central Florida has a 12-0 record and is ranked No. 5–outside of the Final Four mix–and the best record from the Big Ten and SEC representative and Notre Dame is a 3 loss team.
The Orange Bowl, which has been having ticket selling issues in recent years, wants to maximize its selling potential and at least have to option to choose from a larger pool.
With that in mind, before the deal is officially signed–which will include minimum number of appearances for SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame over the length of the contract, the Orange Bowl wants to put in a line in the contract that if a team has a certain BCS ranking–say Top 6–and is available, the OB wants the OPPORTUNITY to select it.

IIRC there is already an agreement between the SEC#2 (which with the upcoming playoff could easily be #3) and the B-12 #2 to face off in a bowl. It is quite possible that this move to freeze the BE out could lead to the #4 or #5 SEC school being the opponent in this bowl game.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. With the upcoming 'Post Season Tournament' about to kick off, and with the inevitable expansion of the "tournament" from the current 4 teams to the eventual 16 teams within 15 years--the college football bowl system will go the way of the NIT Tournament in basketball. The bowl games will be minimized, which will even further expose them for the pyramid schemes they have become.

While I would obviously have the strong bowl tie-ins, I just don't think it will be as big of a deal as some are making it out to be in the long term. I am much more concerned with the access to the postseason for the NNBE...that is where the concern should be.

Totally agree with this. Who cares who gets access to another exhibition game? The ratings will continue to plummet for any bowl game not part of the playoff which will lead to the playoffs expanding.

Agreed. And to take it a step further, I'd be willing to bet that the tournement goes to eight or nine teams rather quickly. The current bowls (including the non-NC BCS bowls) outside the NC Game are more or less exhibition games, watched by the alumni, fans of the schools playing, and a scattering of hard core college fan. Once the NC2A understands how much MORE money the Tournement games bring in (because they actually mean something now), they'll be clamouring to expand it at least one more round plus, perhaps, a play-in game.

The way I see it is that the top 4 teams (theoretically) in the nation will play, but #5 has as much or better shot at beating #1 as #4 does. If you add a round and a play-in game #9 can't exactly make that same claim, especially after going toe-to-toe with #8.

At the end of the day, the former BCS bowls as well as some higher profile Non-BCS bowls should be Tournement games, and the OB will have no choice who they host. Does that make sense? It did to the voices in my head...

This should be no surprise. Predatory practice in college football. The suffocating the life out of the Big East has been going on for a while now. The bowls would rather have a rematch of a regular season game between #12 ranked (in SEC) Mississippi State and #14 ranked (Kentucky) than to have the Big East as an assigned team. News flash there is a real bias against Northeastern football.

While boring to watch, these bowl games bring big-time money that the BE will be missing out on. No money means little advancement for the football team. I could care less who matches up in these bowls but not being in one of the "Top Six" bowls will be a huge financial hit for the conference and cause more teams to look for life boats. If the BE wants some stability they need to land a big bowl berth so programs have incentive to stay. As it stands, I'd be looking for a way out more so than ever if the BE is relegated to hoping for an "at-large" spot

At this point, I think any team in the current BE would take a spot in any of the other 5 'BCS' conferences in a heartbeat. There is nobody voluntarily staying in the BE with other options.

I don't think I can compete with the voices in your head, but I'll try.

There isn't a bias against Northeastern football, there is a bias against fanbases that don't travel. Unfortunately for us, we happen to be in a conference full of fanbases that don't travel well when compared to the other power conferences. We don't have traditional powerhouse football programs. The bias is against losing money.

Totally agree. I just feel that the lack of a bowl tie in makes schools like UConn, RU, and Louisville even more likely to find greener pastures

This would make sense except for the fact that when the ACC chose to expand they grabbed fan bases with a history of not traveling well at all... and if they were worried about getting lots of fans to travel you'd think the Orange Bowl would have grabbed UConn instead of Stanford.. Don't get me wrong I think fans in the seats matter to the Orange Bowl folks but I think it's like 7th on the list. I think it's much more about their old boy's network and protecting entrenched interests.

How much of the "big money" is reality vs perception? We were really rolling in it after the fiesta bowl.

It's not so much what we made on the Fiesta Bowl as much as what the conference will make. If you think it was bad for the BCS bowl, what do you think the Beef Bowl pays....not enough to cover football expenses. As it stands look for more bowl games against the MAC and C-USA instead against higher level competition. While the avg fan might not enjoy the current post season, I would bet that a recruit would rather go to a school that cannot play in a big time bowl vs whatever the BE will get

The ACC doesn't need Pitt for the Orange Bowl. They have FSU and Clemson. The Orange Bowl isn't leaving the ACC. They ACC didn't take Pitt/Cuse for the Orange Bowl.

The Orange Bowl took a top ranked team over an unranked team. I don't know why that would surprise anyone. It had nothing to do with travelling fanbases. And if you read the post I was responding to, he wasn't talking about top ranked teams, he was talking about the bottom ranked teams in the SEC getting invites over Big East teams.

No I'm not suggesting that we not go based on the cash, or lack thereof, but those big bowls are clearly a cash grab for the organizers. We were forced to eat thousands of tickets because their ticket policy flooded the market with basically free tickets. Brilliant business really. UConn would never say no and they made huge coin on the tickets and still had @sses in seats to buy concessions. The beef bowl honestly wouldn't cover the costs, but no way the loss would be as huge as what the fiesta bowl was. We still go though. Exposure cannot be overvalued.

I agree 100% with all that. The bowls rip off the teams but you can't beat the exposure and press you get for being in the big bowls.
