No surprises in the top 25...lots of preseason AA/POY candidates are shining early:

Oregon throttled Alaska Anchorage by 79. Ionescu with a triple double, Satou Sabally with 21, Boley 14 pts as a starter, Hebard with 17 despite feeling under the weather.

Syracuse rolls over North Dakota, winning by 36. Mangakahia with a quieter night, 11 points, 3 assists and 4 steals in 22 minutes.

Baylor throttles Nicholls State by 61. Solid contributions from freshmen...lots of shared minutes.

South Florida throttles Ohio State despite Laksa shooting just 4/16. Rude of me to say, but I'm excited to see how bad OSU is this year.

Iowa crushes Dakota Weslyan (didn't even know this school existed). Gustafson with 22/12/5 blocks, no turnovers on 11/12 shooting.

Louisville blew out Western Kentucky, they had a 34 point lead going into the 4th quarter. Asia Durr starts her POY campaign strong with 33 points. Transfer Diop started and had a good game (11/10). Also worth noting, Dana Evans apparently beat out Arica Carter for her starting spot but Carter had a great game off the bench with 19 points, Evans had just 4.

Mississippi State blew out Southeast Missouri State by 35. McCowan had 24/17 and 7 blocks. Got to the line 15 times as well. No other big standouts, although Chloe Bibby shot 3/7 from deep and Wiggins took 4 triples off the bench (hit just 1), so I'm guessing those will be their 2 main perimeter threats. No 3pt shots from Danberry or Holmes.

Cal beats Houston 80-79. No idea how Houston is supposed to be this year, but Anigwe had 37/13. Former high recruit Recee Caldwell struggled big time in her first game as a Bear, just 3 points, 2 assists, and 8 turnovers.

Missouri beats Western Illinois by 25...Cunningham with 31/8.

Ionescu got her triple-double by playing 31 minutes in a 79-point beatdown of an overmatched team who played them to accommodate Hebard's homecoming. Nice...

My Simian colleague in Notre Dame fandom, Orangutan, noted on the Bench that Virginia Tech won it's first game 96-45 over USC Upstate and one Dara Mabrey scored 18 points, tying Tech senior guard Taylor Emery for the game high.

Va Tech Kenny Brooks was pretty juiced about his freshman point guard.

“She shoots the ball extremely well,” Tech coach Kenny Brooks said. “She will help stretch the defenses — kind of picking your poison if you want to play us zone. She has unlimited range.”

Mabrey, the younger sister of Notre Dame star Marina Mabrey and former Notre Dame standout Michaela Mabrey, was 4 of 8 from 3-point range against the Spartans’ zone defense.

Brooks also appreciated Mabrey’s presence for another reason.

“She’s a two-time New Jersey player of the year, and … New Jersey has some of the best girls’ high school basketball,” Brooks said. “Another thing she does for us is just name recognition [with recruits]. We had a big-time recruit here today, and she’s a rival of Dara’s, and she’s looking at us. It kind of opens up a lot of doors.”

Charlie...any idea who this rival might've been? Assuming we're talking Jersey. Maybe even Jersey Shore.

Now, this is just the first game for Mabrey and the Hokies will play significantly tougher competition, but Coach Brooks is pretty juiced first time out.

Regarding Syracuse's win over North Dakota, the Summit League champ last year, Coach Q. threw waves of personnel at ND, with newcomers Kiara Lewis (soph. transfer from Ohio State) and Emily Engstler (frosh from NYC) each scoring 13 points off the bench. If the newcomers can join with the returners and improve the 3-pt. shooting pct., the Orange could start being a run and gun machine again.

North Dakota is in the Big Sky, not the Summit League. They were 5-13 in conference regular season play and lost in the 1st round of the conference tournament.

The various schools from the Dakotas confuse the heck out of me. I've never quite figured out which conference each is in since they've all moved up to D1. Or mascots. I know one is the Bison, but they pronounce it as if it was a z instead of an s. Bizon. Weird.

NDSU are the Bison...... they have the great Green and Yellow color scheme. They are the football powerhouse.

Hmm, then how is that they're listed in the Big Sky standings from last year?

Big Sky Conference

I had to look it up just now to see what happened.

It's official: North Dakota leaving Big Sky for Summit League, Missouri Valley

North Dakota will take most sports, like basketball, to the Summit League for the 2018-19 school year and will play football in the Missouri Valley Conference starting in 2020.

The announcement made official a Tuesday report indicating UND would be changing conferences.

“The Big Sky Presidents’ Council ... understands (North Dakota’s) decision to find a better geographic footprint and natural rivalries,” the Big Sky said in a news release. “The Big Sky Conference would like to thank the North Dakota Fighting Hawks for its membership and looks forward to hosting its athletic programs through the 2017-18 season.”

Well, based on what I learned just now, it's really easy in basketball and most other sports: All four of the "Dakota" schools are now in the Summit League. Apparently the lone exception if football, where North Dakota will be in the Missouri Valley starting next year.

The Bizon played Gonzaga in the first round of the men's NCAA Tourney a few years ago ('15 I think). Game was in Seattle, I was there. GU won but NDSU was pesky and kept it closer than expected.

I know one of them is the Jackrabbits, I think that's South Dakota St. Good women's hoops program.

That does make it easy, I should be able to remember that.
