The IOC, FIBA and many Olympic committees are delightfully old school sexist.

I'm guessing the women knew about what was going to happen ('cause, hey, it ain't like it's the first tie) and took advantage of the timing to bring attention and pressure.

Asian countries treatment of women is appalling. When I was a young engineer at Bechtel, a Chinese-American designer and San Francisco commissioner from Chinatown offered to bring me back a wife from China. He made the trip once a year to get wives for the local community because of their disdain for Americanized women. He liked me, and so spent a good amount of time trying to convince me...just another head shaker.
