A potential opponent has to balance the trip west being cost effective (often playing a 2nd team) and in the right strength of competition bracket for that year's plans before committing. Years ago, when Rutgers was good, they would often schedule a 2 game road trip, generally one good and one not so strong team together, we went on a couple of trips. Clemson / LSU; Pepperdine tourney (I think the other good team was Florida), Pacific and a game in Texas (I forget the opponent). Etc. Trying to maximize the cost effectiveness at a time it wasn't as important as today. The several year in advance schedules are more common in some of the other sports, I believe [/QUOTE]
