Husky fans all know that Saniya had a bunch of high-scoring games and racked up nearly 3,000 points while playing high school basketball. But she also shot 87 percent from the free throw line over her four years at Ossining. That means Geno is not going to sweat if his only freshman gets fouled late in a close game this season.

Assuming the Huskies have any close games, of course!

In one game against a top opponent last year she made her last 20 FT attempts, mostly in the 4th quarter.

From some of the video I've seen she seems to be a very good passer as well, particularly outlet passes starting the break.

I believe that was the game against Christ The King ........... Saniya made her last 14 FTs in a row.....Saniya had a s0-so 1st half. (feeling sick to her stomach due to a flu shot).....and then a very good 3rd quarter and a spectacular 4th quarter (29 pts in the 4th quarter)..... click on this LINK for video highlights from that Christ The King game ( be patient, the video takes a little while to load). Click on this LINK to read a USA Today article on the game.

Saniya is an EXCELLENT passer............................there is going to be some heavy duty jaw dropping on the Boneyard once Saniya gets comfortable with Geno's offensive / defensive schemes and the tendencies of her new teammates...................I've got my fingers crossed that Saniya doesn't hit that dreaded Freshman Wall that so many young players smack into at some point in their first season.......Go Huskies!...........can't wait for Friday!

There's not much Saniya can't do, including rebound.

My sentiments exactly, chrissaran..................and whether Saniya is 5'9", as they listed her in high school...........or 5'8", as she's listed on the UConn roster (I'm sure Bria stole an inch from her) Saniya jumped center for her high school team and has excellent hops................she'll definitely grab some rebounds that will surprise you.

wonk...agree 100%....I posted the following about Saniya in July:

But she was a good high school player, right? She was better than good, averaging 34.4 points per game her senior year. And 9.1 assists, six rebounds and 5 steals per game. Last year, in 27 games Chong made 108 three-pointers. She also shot 87% from the free throw line. For her four year career, she scored 2,988 total points, including at least 30 points in 51 of her 96 games. She can score.

What does Shea Ralph think? According to Shea, "She's going to be great in our system. She is a little bigger than most people think. She is very comfortable with the ball in her hands. She's a great passer. And she can shoot it from 30 feet out. I remember we took Geno to a game and she made eight 3's in a row....right in front of him." When asked to compare Chong to herself, Shea said, "She is more athletic than I was. She's a better shooter than I was. She's a point guard, who also scores, a "scoring one". Like Shea, but better? Sweet.

What does Geno think? "She is fast, she can handle the ball. She's a tough kid. And she scores. And she likes to pass the ball, which is unusual for a kid who scores that many points. She reminds me of Shea, except that she can shoot from the perimeter better, she scores points in lots of ways. She gets to the free throw line a lot. I just like her." He should know.

The hypothetical which kicked off this thread : Saniya in late in a close game at the foul line. That could be a situation created by a flourishing of a very talented freshman OR fouling out of 2-3 guards. In either event I am pleased to be reminded in the posts above about her many talents. This year should present many opportunities to get bench players quality seasoning game minutes. I would not be surprised to find Saniya challenging other guards and keeping them on their toes.

Standing next to Saniya at First Night, she sure looks taller than 5'8" and appears to have bulked up some over the summer.

Regarding the MSGVarsity video, I think their announcers, particularly Jimmy Cavallo are fantastic. They just do high school sports, but the quality of the broadcasts are tops.

That's a big assumption. Another would be that if we are in a close game at the end, Chong would be in the game. In real close games, Geno usually only goes about 7 deep. I don't see her any higher up the depth chart than 8-9.

HOWEVER, if UCONN was in a close game at the end, it would probably be due to some heavy foul trouble, so yea, maybe she is in. Anyway to the OP point, don't think Geno has to worry too much about her foul shooting. :)

KML shot 89.5% last year. Dolson at 79.6%, Hartley at 78.5%. I think we are ok there.

I think all of you are way off the mark. Chong simply can't be all that good. After all, she was only ranked 75th by HoopGurlz. According to their evaluation she is uncomfortable off the ball and too frail to play at this level.

Saw her play. Her only down side, she took her jump shot from the chest. I am sure that Shea, Geno and Chris will make the necessary corrections.

Where was Saniya when we needed just 1 more FT against ND last year?! :)

Yep, in the CTK game, Saniya was very sick and struggling with her shot. So, like Maya and others before her, she found a way to win: get to the FT line.

Speaking of Maya, she's always been a good FT shooter, but I believe she improved through her college career. Then in the WNBA, she has become one of the top shooters at about 88%. Saniya is practically there now. Yikes!

Here's something to think about. Saniya was ranked 75 in the hs polls. She was POY nationally. I was at the Christ the King game. She was far and above any player on the floor which included a very good Sierra Calhoun. Saniya was sick. In the first quarter she did very little scoring. You could see how sick she was. When she turned it on it was one of the best performances I've ever seen. She did everything from scoring inside outside made some terrific steals late in the game and some terrific rebounding while adding a bunch of assists. She sees the floor very well, and she is a great passer and can penetrate. IMO and I've said this before. In my book she was a top 5 player. When she gets a few games under her belt UConn fans will be surprised.

I think she'll get plenty of playing time and opportunities to show what she can do. She'll really be needed come NCAA tournament time.
