Two players drafted in the top 5 (Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon) ... after they became National Champion. Extraordinary company (including Alcindor, Allen & Magic/Kelser & Kentucky 2012 & UNC)

From the WSJ. However, given how hard it is to be NC, I think it is tough to label the IU team this year as underachieving. Run into the wrong team ... and you're OUT.

Plus, not all drafts are created equal. Zeller and Oladipo both might have had a hard time cracking the top five in any other draft. And in other seasons, you had international players or high school kids (before they changed the rule) in the top five who didn't play college, making it that much harder for a college kid to be in the top five. In fact, one year, the top five was Kwame Brown-Eddy Curry-Pau Gasol-Tyson Chandler-Jason Richardson, with only Richardson coming out of a college (and Dwight Howard went 1 and Shaun Livingston 4 in the year Okafor/Gordon were 2-3).
