There is a thread over on the "general" board, but I figured the main board is appropriate for a thread since there are multiple teams with UConn representation.

The women's Olympic basketball tournament got underway, with Spain edging South Korea (73-69) and Canada falling to Serbia, 72-68.

In the Canada game, Kia Nurse started and played 38 minutes, by far the most of any Canadian player. Other starters were Bridget Carlton (Iowa State), Shay Colley (Michigan State), Natalie Achonwa (Notre Dame) and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe.

Canada's scoring was led by Nirra Fields (UCLA) off the bench with 19 points, Nurse with 16, and Colley with 12. However, according to the Globe and Mail article, Colley had to leave the game in the 3rd quarter with an apparent shoulder injury.

According to the boxscore, Aaliyah Edwards only played for 16 seconds and finished with no stats. Other recognizable names: Leticia Amihere (South Carolina) had 2 points and 3 rebounds in 17 minutes; and Shaina Pellington (Oklahoma/Arizona) had 2 points in 13 minutes.

Canada next plays South Korea at 9:00 pm ET on Wednesday.

France up 17-13. Gabby had one great block, a nice 3pt basket and looked generally very active. Then was substituted half way through 1Q

Canada was terrible shooting the ball. 5-29 from 3.

Thanks for pointing this out. Here's a link to a live stream of the France-Japan game:

Not an upset IMO. Serbia took bronze in Rio and won the Eurobasket this year. They have experienced, world-class players like Vasic and Dabovic. Not to be taken lightly.

I watched the last 8 minutes. Canada missed some key foul shots. And clearly didn’t play Edward’s enough!

France-Japan coming down to the wire. It's been an exciting 4th quarter. Japan just hit a huge 3 to take a 4-point lead with 28 seconds left.

Gabby has made a lot of great plays albeit without a lot of scoring. Sandrine Gruda has been automatic with her baseline turnaround, Olajuwon-like.

Japan making 3 pt shots all game. Also pressuring the French. Every shot is tough

Gabby with an awesome strip and breakaway layup to give France a chance, cutting the lead to 2. But then France wasted precious seconds before fouling, and then Japan iced it with free throws.

Gabby didn't shoot great but stuffed the stat sheet with 9 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 steals. The FIBA commentator raved about her defense but said that France's defense otherwise left a lot to be desired. Gruda led all scorers with 18.

Japan had balanced scoring, and really won this game from the arc (11 of 27) and the free throw line (17 of 23).

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Bird and Taurasi are light years better than every other guard on team USA with the exception of Loyd. They are only just "much better" than jewel Lloyd.

And for the record, I like Loyd's game.

Sue has 10 dimes so far, and the scorer missed at least 1. She's killing Nigeria.

People want to tell me that Collier deserves her spot on this team over Ogwumike after her performance tonight? Collier looked lost out there, granted that it was only 2 minutes.

19/13 for Wilson. Strong game.

Sue's shot is crap (0-6), but she has 12 assists.
