I just found the games last night to be particularly noteworthy from one statistical view point. Their were 4 games involving a ranked team last night and in three them FT shooting was pretty pathetic - number in () is their FG shooting:
Oregon St: 13-22 59.1% (43.9)
UNC: 12-26 46.2% (27.6)

Wichita State: 2-2 100% (36.4)
TN: 13-22 59.1% (40.8)

Canisius: 2-7 28.6% (33.3)
Syracuse: 12-23 52.2% (30.9)

Even with Wichita shooting 100% (unfortunately only two FT) that works out to a combined 52.9% - considering that free throws are worth only 1 point, the effective percentage that represents is around 27% from 2 or 17% from 3. Hack a Shaq might in deed be a valid defensive strategy except you can foul anyone on some of these teams!

With the FG % as well I guess Debbie A had a tough night!

(At least in the last of the four games the teams did significantly better on FT.
Alcorn State: 9-12 75% (24.1)
Michigan St: 25-37 67.6% (49.0))

Successful free throw shooting takes tons of repetitive practice. Donny Marshall shot in the 90 percent range, and his shot was textbook. The key- minimal motion to eliminate as many variables as possible, and lots of practice until it becomes automatic. Check out how kids shoot free throws and how consistent their motion is.

UNC is now shooting 61.8% on FTs for the year.

The Tarheels actually do have a course on FT shooting in their program and all the players on the team are signed up. Unfortunately, none of the students are required to actually attend these classes, so . . . .
