Offense sells tickets, defense wins games...

Against LSU last night, UConn's defense held their opponent to 14 first half points. For the game, the Huskies created 28 total turnovers, stole 15 passes and blocked 9 shots. And they did all this without Stewie..!! For the season, the story on defense has been the same. A smothering, switching combination of man to man and zone defense that denies the ball, denies the shot and then denies the rebound. Consider the following:

1. In nine games the defense has forced 194 turnovers. That is 21.5 per game and many led to easy breakaway baskets.
2. UConn blocks an average of 6 shots every game, for a season total of 54.
3. At least six players have 18 or more steals & the team has 123 total, almost 14 per game.
4. Opponents have only made 38 free throws vs 112 for UConn. Don't foul on shots..!
5. Everybody rebounds defensively. Stewie has 46 or 19% of the total. Gabby has 41, Collier 37, Tuck 32, and MoJeff & Lou have 19. Nurse is 7th with 18 defensive rebounds.
6. No opponent has had a lead on UConn in the 2nd half of any game.
7. Total time UConn has been behind this season is 2 minutes and 47 seconds.

Good defense has always been Geno's priority. This season is no different. And, they will only get better between today and April..!!
