Rebuild the Civic Center as an arena/hotel/casino complex. Done. That will get outside investment. Why put a cheesy slot parlor in Enfield or Windsor Locks? All the objections to a casino in Hartford in the past carry no weight now.

Outstanding idea! It would be just big enough to draw people to aid in the Hartford revitalization while allowing area restaurants/clubs etc. to share in the growth. That is unlike Mohegan/Foxwoods that are totally self sufficient and don't have as much of a positive effect on area businesses.

They should have done that years ago. Steve Wynn was on board. It got voted down because of the "unsavory element" a casino would attract. Great decision there.

But there's a long history of urban casinos in the USA, and it always ends badly. Hartford would have to be lucky not to reproduce the stuff that goes on elsewhere. Las Vegas is the lone success. Drugs and prostitution shoot up sky high around casinos.

Right, but the climate towards casinos was so much different back then. And it would have broken the compact with the Indian casinos, that was too much money to give up. Now we can bring the tribes aboard in a joint venture.

Mmm, you might want to check Atlantic City before you completely poopah that statement.

I'm not at all convinced that casinos work as an urban rivitalization plan. I'm also not convinced that Connecticut needs or can support another casino. For that matter, I'm not entirely convinced that rehabing or rebuilding the XL brings a reasonable ROI, absent UConn moving more games there, and even then I think it is an uphill climb.

That said, I do like the idea of the minor league park. Again, the devil is in the details, but I think that can be a very nice addition to the city.

Is this being proposed or is this just your opinion?
