This thread's half-life in the basketball forum is about 20 minutes.

Regarding the president, it really says it all about how quickly America is falling that our Congress and President are blowing through 1 trillion a year in borrowed money, and he's smiling and yucking it up over a kids' game for the good press. Ah well. It was a fun 100 years or so.

Everyone in the world should finish every aspect of every job at their work before they do something they enjoy? I'm not standing up for Obama because I didn't vote for him nor do I want to turn this political, but if he wants to take 30 minutes out of his day to fill out a bracket and get some good pub with the reelection nearing what's the big deal?

Lol you guys are too funny. First of all, noone is getting all worked up over Obama's picks. It's just interesting to see how the president of our country thinks the tourny will go. In my opinion, if Bush was showing his picks, you guys wouldn't have a problem with it.

How come you don't complain when Presidents come out and throw the first pitch?

Yes, lots of people care. Can we get back to talking about whether Cuse is going to make it to the round of 32 or not?

I think that was the first time I've ever stood up for Obama.

Because they were just looking for anything to knock the president. If you don't like his politics thats ok, but this arguement is just stupid.

If Obama didn't select a chalk Final Four but instead picked some less fashionable teams and got the champion right, I'd say he spends way too much time watching hoops and should spend more time analyzing the economy. Chalk is the politically correct way to go.

Couldn't agree more.

When my guy does something it shows how he's in touch with the common man, or how he makes good decisions. When the other guy does the same thing it shows how distracted he is, and is the reason that our country is going down the tubes.

I hope this comment wasn't in reference to my comments. I wasn't making a political statement just an observation that would apply to any president. Also, I was joking. I guess I needed a smiley so people wouldn't make more of it than it was.

I'm from a strong Republican state, so that's why I had the take I did. All things aside this shouldn't be a political argument at all, it's just a great chance for Obama to relate to the common person as stated above. It makes him seem more like a normal guy and less like a sleazy politician. Like I said, I don't agree with his political ideas but if you don't see this as a good opportunity for him I simply disagree.

Nah, I was making a general comment about MSNBC/Fox news commentators wasting time talking about made up issues because they have to fill 24 hours instead of actually reporting on policy.

You think the President of the U.S. should behave like everybody else with a job? Really?
I think that the President, of either party, and the entire elected Congress should be in crisis mode, and I think that they should have been for the last 10 years or so.
You get elected to the most important job in the world for 4 years, you should spend all of it attempting to right this sinking ship, not playing golf, going on vacation, throwing out pitches, and so on.
Hey, just my opinion.
If you believe the country is "in recovery," then you're all set. No worries. Make comments about "moving to Mexico."
If, on the other hand, you see gasoline caroming toward 4 bucks a gallon, more people without work since 30 years ago, 1 in 14 on welfare and growing rapidly and the most since the depression, and on and on and on, then you should be pissed that elected leaders waste time on such meaningless crap.

Leaving aside some of the politics of this post (like how the president can actually change gas prices), multiple studies show that people do a better, more efficient job with more time off. Being stressed all the time is actually detrimental to effectiveness. US produces more, but works a lot more, than countries like Germany and Norway, which compare very favorably to US workers (often rank higher) in productivity.

Anyway, this is veering into a Cesspool conversation.

Gas prices are related to supply and demand. A president for example can open up the gulf to drilling, open up Alaska to drilling, approve a pipeline from our closest ally. Will it change prices tomorrow, no, but don't be naive that a president can't effect gas prices.

Behind Canada, the US has the largest reserves in the world as stated by the US Geological Survey. We are laughed at by OPEC and others. We can even become an exporter. Just sayin.

Neither the president nor congress can change gasoline prices - to be sure. But what they could do, if they weren't busy taking vacations and dicking around with NCAA brackets, is work on ways to mitigate the huge impact of fuel prices on the economy.
Multiple studies show what? That if you take time off, you're more efficient when you do work? No crap. They needed studies to conclude that? I could have told you that after working at a pizza joint for 3 months when I was 16.

It's the president. You should be working harder and longer, to increase total productivity, and not taking constant vacations to "increase efficiency."

It's symbolic more that material, to be sure - it's like telling knock-knock jokes at a funeral - it's indicative that you're not clear about the seriousness of the situation.

Oil is kind of my thing (as some may remember). The president can't do squat to impact gasoline prices. Virtually every drilling rig in the U.S. is in constant use. More drilling will do very little to increase supply.
Regarding the "largest reserves in the world," comment, reserves are meaningless - what is meaningful is production.
Let me put it this way.
Let's suppose we had 50 times the amount of oil that Saudi Arabia had but it was all 40 miles under the surface. It would be useless to us, as we couldn't get it out.
The "reserves" you refer to are shale, which is rock with oil mixed in. Great. Except, unlike conventional oil, you can't just put a straw in it and pull it out. It's like being in a boat at sea and being thirsty - water, water everywhere, but not a drop to spare.

shale reserves are in the rockies, oil and natural gas are in alaska and the gulf which are the easiest places to start. it's kind of my thing too.
and you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth. so what that every rig is operating at 100% capacity. we can have thousands of additional rigs operating at 100% in the underdeveloped areas greatly increasing supply. and if it is so hard to get the rock shale reserves why is canada doing such a good job of getting it??? with China looming as their biggest customer. why are the economies of montana and the dakotas boomings?? and like i said it would not effect prices tomorrow but we would be the biggest supplier down the road. just look at natural gas. we have it, we figured a way to get it and know my gas bill has gone down by 20%.

it's a good thing for the US to give billions of dollars to Brazil and Mexico to develop their oil industries but we can't do the same thing here. but as long as i get my subsidy to by a Volt i should be happy. oh wait they stopped making those.

Since when did filling out a friggin bracket have anything to do with going on vacation? Other analysis of Obama belongs on a different board, this thread purely was talking about his bracket.

And I don't think any reasonable person has a problem with Obama taking 5 minutes to fill one out (even if we don't particularly care what teams he picked)
