NY Times on wnba overseas commitments

Interesting. Women's professional basketball is a lot like soccer. The BiG BucKs are in Europe, while the American pro league is the second tier. OK. That's life.

Don't really begrudge their leaving for national team play. That's what happens all the time with top pro teams in Europe: foreign players, and European players, are regularly taking off to play in caps.

Would be interesting to know how much they're making on these national teams. Probably would be embarrassing to the WNBA, however, which refuses to pay anything close to competitive wages that would make it a real draw for the best players.

The odd thing is that the European leagues pay more, partly because the teams are owned by billionaires looking for prestige, not profit. When Sue Bird says that the WNBA is the best league in the world BY FAR, I believe her.
