Last night's game gives the Fighting Irish a losing record. When was the last time that was true? Which got me thinking: When was the last time we had a losing record? Anybody know?

It is mentioned (somewhat frequently) that UConn hasn't lost two straight games in 25 years or so. I believe that streak includes the last game of one season and the first game of the next season. Given those conditions, the only chance UConn has been "underwater" since 1993 would be a year where they lost the first game of the season following a year when they won the championship. Fortunately in many respects but unfortunately here, there is (or should that be "are") a boatload of those years to check. Anybody know where I can find records going back that far?

For fans of other programs, how long has it been since your team has had a losing record?

Last UConn losing season was in 1985-86 at 12-15.

Thanks for the link, Steve, but I'm looking for the last time UConn's record was under .500 at any time during the season, not just at the end... unless that was in 1985. Maybe I'd better check the link first! ;)

OOps, linkey no workey.
I am attempting to redeem myself.

As best as I can determine, the last time UConn was under .500 was 11/19/95, a season opening OT loss to La Tech. Since then, they have started at .500 (1-1) in 2004, losing the 2nd game to UNC, and in 2014 losing the 2nd game to Stanford.

I hope you have more success with this link:

Season records can be found beginning on page 82.

Wow!! You can take "attempting to" right out of that opening sentence (and add an "ing" to redeeming. This is the best answer I've had on here, maybe EVER! Thanks for the additional, and interesting, instances where UConn was at .500. I also find it interesting that UConn's last under water mark was the result of an overtime loss. I'm going to go out on a limb here (not) and say that Geno may not be the greatest overtime coach the game has ever seen.

What it comes down to is recruiting. I think MM has had a couple of years of 'not the best' coming in.

Additionally (and based on what I can find...), the last time they were below .500, other than starting 0-1, was the 1990-1991 season when they started 1-2. They opened the season by beating Holy Cross, but then dropped two in a row to Iowa and Purdue.

Ha I'll go ever further. I can't even remember the last overtime game that UConn won. Is there any coach with a *worse* record in OT games?

Doing a pretty quick scan, the last OT win I could find was January 4, 2003 -- a 63-62 win over Tennessee at Gampel.

Holy cow lol. Even longer than since the last time Notre Dame had a losing record (Dec. 2003).

Dare I ask how many OT losses UConn has experienced since then?

Five losses I think. Duke in E8 game in 06, ND x3 and Miss State.

So but for those losses maybe 14 national championships? Incredible.

Edit: I missed the Stanford game.

Didn't the 2018 semifinal vs. ND also go to OT?

If so, that would be 0-7 in the last 7?

Geno would be considered a better coach had his team lost those games in regulation by 10.
I of all people certainly mean no slight on Geno. I just find it statistically bizarre. No need for umbrage.

No umbrage and my comment was not directed at you.

In reviewing your list again, wasn't the '96 semifinal vs. Tennessee also an overtime loss?

Yep. Adding it in. Let me know if you can think of any others. I was just scrolling through the historical schedules on the UConn WBB site.
