BY’d who hate the AAC are in essence blaming the victim . The American is a direct result of mistakes made by a once power football conference called the Big East a co-founder of the BCS concept . The origin of power conferences The real villain in the saga were the folks in the Big East who were handed a goose that lays golden eggs and killed because that wanted to have a one night Banquet . The Big East could easily be a top 3 all - sport Conference In the country . Reviewing the football landscape in 1979 -80-81,reveals nothing but opportunity missed . Gavitt‘s idea of forming a conference from Eastern Independent schools who had been unimportant would kick start those schools into national prominence. The successful model and the buzz it created wasn’t missed by football schools . Eastern Football schools were all independent however schools like Pitt and PSU were national powers in the early 1980’s . A Conference of PSU , Pitt, WVA, Syracuse , BCU , *Navy, *Army, Temple , Rutgers and that’s when UConn should have made the plunge then would have created a pretty good buzz. Indy add opportunities were all over the place plus a scheduling deal with ND was also possible . That was the first miss When they finally got around to football 20 years later they made two excellent adds Miami ( the king of the 90’s) and rising power VT but refused to increase beyond 8 the mistake that ultimately was their undoing . Being BCS and a top dog They were in position to raid the Metro a non BCS however home to FSU , plus schools like Louisville , Cincinnati . Just adding FSU and it’s over for the ACC at the time 9 team middling football conference with 4 teams in one state . Even Clemson was no super power at the time . The Big East could have picked of GT , Maryland , Va , Clemson , but at that point a merger with the Big East calling the shots is more probable . But not with 4 Carolina teams . Even after those failures the final straw was rejecting the ESPN offer A Football conference that covers 1/3 of the countries population All Spots Penn State FSU Clemson Pittsburgh West Va Virginia Miami GT Rutgers Football only Army/Navy All sports except Football Villanova Georgetown St Johns Providence Seton Hall ND + football affiliate The second best football conference the best BB conference in the country With talk of the Big 12 taking BB to market How Much is this lineup worth ? UConn UNC Duke Villanova Syracuse Miami Georgetown Providence UVA St Johns ND FSU Pittsburgh Clemson Rutgers or the tourney in MSG
