Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM gave us all something to think about last night. Here are a few of his thoughts I put down on paper to share with you all today. Following tweets comes from BTM. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The cost of doing big time collegiate sports is about to go up if you ask the opinion of any of the FBS Conference Commissioners. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: Alston case is about to be decided on and it will challenge the unity of most of the conferences in ways conferences have never been challenged in modern times in Major Collegiate Sports. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: There is consensus with whom I’ve talked with..Judge is leaning, toward plaintiffs in case. Plaintiffs have argued compensation for Student - Athletes should be decided and offered by individual conferences without outside interferences and collusion among the conferences. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: If Judge rules in favor of the plaintiffs (Alston) and if her remedy is giving conferences total autonomy in deciding level & type compensation above current scholarships & benefits...the ramifications will be swift and intense. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The decision and ability for each conference to offer Student - Athletes a certain level of compensation, in the Post Alston World, will be pushed up against the limits of it lowest financially healthy member. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: Suddenly the University of Texas will care about the financial health of Kansas State. Oklahoma will now want to know what Texas Tech & Iowa State can do for future Student - Athlete compensation levels. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: Another reason why PAC 12 Institutions are willing to give 10% equity to an Investment Firm for short term money payout to each school to help bridge toward next PAC Media negotiations. This short term cash will alleviate compensation issue until next deal..PAC 12 hopes. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: If this Alston case is decided in Plaintiffs favor the effect of the ruling will happen swiftly. Each Conference would have internal debates. Debates on agreeing on compensation and how to police this new reality within each conference will be huge stories going forward. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The Alston case is also another reason why Rutgers received some upfront money on their future Big Ten Media earnings. The conferences are anticipating the Alston case opening up new costs in all of their respective sponsored sports. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: There is always the possibility the Judge rules against the Plaintiffs or the remedy from the Judge for the Plaintiffs is different than what I’m describing. But if it goes the way I believe it will the debates within each conference will challenge each at its core. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The strength of each conference would be at the whim of its financially weakest members. This will bring about realignment. It would be almost impossible not to in 2024. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: Big Ten & SEC would find this new reality a challenge, but they both have the resources, flexibility, and culture to shore up their financially lower institutions. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The implications for the Big 12, a conference which was not built on the foundation of “like minded universities” would be devastating. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: If Alston case is decided in favor of the Plaintiffs the subject of Oklahoma and Texas becoming expansion targets for Big Ten & SEC grows more intense. Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: How would ACC decide it’s level of compensation to future Student - Athletes if this is the final ruling? Among those ACC universities? How would they even start the debate? Greg Flugaur @flugempire 3h3 hours ago BTM: The Judges decision will be known soon. The decision will be appealed no matter which way it goes. But if the decision and remedy goes the way I think it will, it will create an earthquake which will go right through the lands of both P5 and G5.
