They are a part of the Big 12 but they don't particularly have to worry about the conferences viability because they are such a valuable property and they got a sweetheart deal from the ESPN but is in the way of the Big 12 establishing a network. I can see why your conference colleagues would resent that, since it makes their own situations more precarious.
