Bolting on Maryland, Rutgers, and Penn State to an 11 school midwestern league won't give it an eastern feel. That is an illusion. And yes there is still a desire to maintain a southern connection. Pulling southern schools into the Big Ten would be even more awkward than pulling mid-atlantic ones in. It's much easier to pull the northern schools into the southern league.
