Crazy idea, but why not make the NIT a mid-major championship? The power conferences are denying invites at a higher clip, and it would mean a lot more to smaller schools.

The NIT could start its tournament after the first weekend of the NCAA. This would allow invites to go out to mid majors eliminated in the first two NCAA rounds. Play the NIT games weekdays between NCAA tournament gsmee, with the championship games at the garden the week leading up to the Final Four.

Any thoughts?

That's called a back draw or consolation draw. I did this all the time for tennis tournaments I ran so kids who drove a long distance and lose in the first round, don't have to just go home without at least one more opportunity to play.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't think it'll work unless there was prize money involved or expenses paid.

Another option is three team round robins, with the winner advancing. But this could be a logistical nightmare.

Ignorance here--why are no Big East teams in the 2026 NIT?

SHU was really the only team that would have been considered and they didn't want to / weren't able to get enough players to participate.
