Thought this was interesting and worth its own thread:

All college athletes in Nebraska will officially have at least one business offer Thursday when they can begin profiting from their name, image and likeness.

It’s from a familiar brand: Runza.

The regional food chain is offering deals to the first 100 current athletes who opt in and promote the restaurant’s rewards app to their followers on social media. The historic move marks the first time a company is offering athletes in the state an opportunity to be paid for their endorsement of a product on a broad scale.

The payment will be a single flat amount for everyone regardless of what sport they play or which in-state school they attend.

Athletes will be able to join through the so-called Opendorse Deals portal, an online marketplace established by the Lincoln-based athlete-marketing platform that individual athletes can navigate through their Opendorse profiles.

Runza said in a release it plans to use a similar approach for future promotions and fan engagement if its initial foray into NIL marketing performs well.

Nebraska better get out ahead of this because their market would seem to put them at a natural disadvantage.

2 million people and a rural broadband gap doesn't scream marketing but local alums might be feeling generous anyway.

The idea is your message goes much further with those 2 million who are all rabid NU fans than in other places with much more prominent voices around.

Oh and Opendorse is headquartered in Lincoln a stones throw from NU’s campus and the founders are 2 former NU football players

Interesting idea. Seems like a way to put yourself out there and list your fees. Almost like a advertisement board to choose from.

The company started by the two QBs allows people to book college athletes for appearances on the site. It features athletes like Ole Miss QB Matt Corral, Indiana QB Michael Penix and Oklahoma RB Kennedy Brooks.

While appearance fees for Milton and King are $2,000 each, Penix’s fee is $500 and Brooks is asking just $350, Corral is going for the gold. His appearance fee listed on the site as of Thursday morning was $10,000.

Most of this is penny ante stuff: autographs, endorsements of local restaurants and the like. Nice for the kids but not the windfalls they're probably all dreaming will come their way.

The net result will be most kids will get a taste of reality wherein they will get paid for performances that earn them fame but get little more than walking around money, or maybe higher prices for their free tickets if they're just regular players on a team.

The real money is where high name recognition will be key: Instagram, Twitter, etc.

$0.80 per Instagram follower is the estimated value in the following article. In Paige B's case, with her purportedly over 1 million Instagram followers, she'd be way higher paid than anyone in the wNBA or maybe even overseas per this article:

Then there's all this angst in Florida:

This is the big thing. I think endorsements, autograph runs, TV commercials...players won't have time. Influencers is where this will work. instagram post promoting this or that.

Or, Bueckers takes photos wearing clothes, hats, or sponsoring a drink or event.

Olivia Dunne. Cavinder twins at Fresno. What do these things have in common? I'll be shocked when it becomes apparent that young coeds who fit the traditional mold of "easy on the eyes" are raking in the cash.

I hope this makes UCONN more competitive in the recruiting marketplace. Edsall has been a vocal supporter for this change as has senator Murphy, hopefully they both saw this as somehow leveling the playing field for UCONN.

Connecticut doesn't have the clutter of professional sports or multiple high profile D1 schools so that seems like a good thing. UCONN and its athletes very much own this state from a media perspective.
