Poster "oldude" made a very interesting observation concerning this game. He said: "I know it’s a little disrespectful to Travis Mays and the Mustangs to start talking about 100 when UConn has yet to secure 99, but in all honesty SMU will put up about as much resistance on Saturday as an old beach house facing a tidal wave. The good thing about facing SMU prior to SC, is that the Mustangs are just about the only team in the AAC with real size. They can go 6’3”, 6’5” & 6’6” up front and will be able to challenge UConn’s inside shooting and contest rebounds at both ends. In effect, SMU is the perfect tune-up game for SC". I concur with his take. This is exactly what the doctor ordered. This match up against SMU could not have come at a better time. UConn should be better prepared for for SC after playing a team with some size, as opposed to a small team with little or no height. The Gamecocks will play Auburn (15-9) tomorrow (2/9) before their date with UConn. Auburn has a 3 guard/2 forward starting lineup of 5'6", 5'10", 6'1' guards & their 2 forwards are both 6'2". Auburn is coming off of two successive loses to Miss St. & Texas A&M. It's doubtful Auburn will provide anything of substance in this game that SC can use to prepare for UConn. No doubt this game has been circled on the gamecock calendar since the schedule was announced, and IS their BIGGEST game of the season. No pressure for the gamecocks though. They're only playing the last undefeated team in the country that hasn't lost a game in 3 years, and is looking forward to putting a "milestone" notch on their winning streak belt. They'll be playing in the campus arena that will be sold out and very loud. Every rowdy in the area will be there. They will drown out any audible noise (if any) the few SC fans in attendance try to make. When they go to their morning shooound, they'll become acquainted with the mystique that is Gampel Pavilion. It will be the quietest time they'll spend in Gampel that day. With a late 9:00 pm local start time, they'll have the rest of the day to stay cramped up in their hotel rooms, pondering their fate. Gampel is not an easy venue to play or win in, it never has been. It's the place where dreams go to die if you're an opponent. Large butterflies will be present prior to the tip. This game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. You can bet All of WCBB will be watching. Go Huskies! :)
