Arkeel Newsome, Ansonia (Conn.)

Last year: 2,245 yards

It's hard to believe that a running back can rush for 2,245 yards and have a down season, but Newsome set the bar high during his sophomore season when he was one of the leading rushers in the nation with 3,763 yards. He already has 6,818 career yards and could go over 10,000 by the time he's done.

Why he will lead the nation in rushing: He's come close to doing it before. His sophomore total of 3,763 yards ranks as one of the best single-season rushing totals in national history. Ansonia is also an outstanding program capable of going deep in the playoffs.

Why he won't: Newsome's carries went down by about 90 last year, but it didn't really matter because Ansonia posted its second straight 14-0 season. If Ansonia continues to roll over teams, that likely means fewer carries in the second half for Newsome

Do you guys think if Newsome receives an offer from an actual Division 1A program his commitment will stick ?

69 is still waiting for someone to 'like' one of his posts. When will he get the hint?
Back to the original post, the Cochran Rule will likely keep Newsome from breaking more records.

Newsome averaged 22 carries per game as a sophomore, 17 as a junior. Some of those touches went to Andrew Matos (WR/URI) and Jai'Quan McKnight (QB/2015). It was also due to an early season ankle injury. With the graduation of Matos, a young receiving corp, and a big, physical, experienced O-line returning; a stronger, healthier Newsome is primed for 20+ carries again this season. If he can stay healthy and gets 20-25 carries per game, with a deep run into the playoffs, then he'll have a chance to top 3,000 yards this season.

The stat that is simply mind-boggling is that Newsome scores once every 6 touches. (610 career carries, 108 rushing touchdowns).

One thing to also consider is that, should Ansonia make it to the Class S final, they will play 15 games this season.

I don't think the Cochran Rule will have any affect on the CTHS records he's chasing, if he stays healthy, this season. He's chasing the CTHS career scoring record (he'll likely break that in week 1) and the CTHS career rushing record (he's 1462 yards away). If he stays on his career average of 170 yards per game, he could break that in week 8 or 9.

As for reaching 10,000 career yards, it will be tough, but not impossible. He'd need to average 215 yards per game and Ansonia would need to play in the Class S final (3200 yards over 15 games).

Kris, any idea if he'll play CB again this season?
Yes, he will start a CB along with Jai'Quan McKnight (QB/DB, 6'0, 190), who I think can play CB/FS at the next level.

Heard they also had a lineman hurt in the Shelton scrimmage this evening. Newsome and many other did not dress. If McKnight is out, it's a huge loss. It will mean heavy doses of Newsome and someone will have to step up. Injuries happen, good teams adjust.

McKnight suffering from turf toe, an injury he sustained last season. He'll be good to go in week 1.

Yeah - saw all the "damage control" flowing this afternoon after last night's NVL Football tweet.

Mentioned the near-hysteria over Ansonia injuries to Tom Brockett last night. His eye rolls would have bowled 300 #cthsfb

Only bad thing is that "turf toe" tends to re-occur but is usually manageable in most cases.

Newsome, who already broke the CIAC scoring record in week 1, needs just 602 yards to become CIAC's all-time leading rusher. Alex Thomas (Ansonia/Yale) holds the record with 8279 yards.

Through four games Newsome is averaging exactly 215 yards/game keeping him on pace to possibly surpass 10,000 yards rushing in his career.

This how I envision Arkeel's running style treating defenses next season.
