Khalid El-Amin leaped up on the scorer's table and screamed into the sudden silence of the student section. He pounded his chest and hoisted an index finger into the air.

After sinking the winning basket with two seconds remaining, the ebullient UConn guard wanted to inform those who pay tuition, room, board and little heed to decorum at Pittsburgh exactly who was the No. 1 basketball team in the nation.

Was it the crowning moment of sportsmanship in UConn history?

Nope.

Was it, given such belligerent circumstances, understandable?

Yep.

There's a thin line between old- time basketball and old-time idiocy and the Pitt fans crossed it at times Saturday.

"I told the kids if they thought Mass. was hostile, they have no idea,'' Jim Calhoun said after his No. 1-ranked team beat Pitt, 70-69. ``I think they believe me now. I got a couple of welts to prove it.''

One of my favorite games. And I wasn't even watching TV. Was working in Quincy and my wife (Pitt alum) and I were looking at houses. Had it on the radio and wifey was all "Pitt is better than UConn this year" in my face for 39 minutes.

She didn't talk to me for like an hour after that.
