These are all just interim arrangements until the final design is reached. ADs know what their institutions goals and objectives are and are postering to best achieve those while paying the bills. None will last long term. Its fan bases that bring the revenue and need to be satisfied in order to reach max profitability. If you put FSU and Clemson in the SEC, 29 of the last 30 football national championships have been won by current P2 schools. I see the logical result being tiered conferences set up by major sports. Football, basketball, baseball, hockey. Football. Tier 1 is top 36-40 national brands, mostly current P2 plus minus a few. These are the schools that will do almost anything to win including sign stealing, police bribing, etc. UConn is not that type of school and personally I’m not interested in being their weekly patsies (hello Rutgers) with half plus attendance consisting of their fans. Tier 2 next 80 to 100 schools is where we’d fit. Interesting and competitive regional rivalries. We belong in a football conference playing BC, UMass, Syracuse, Pitt, WV, etc. Tier 3,4 etc Hoops. Top 200 teams with 64 team tournament. Or 48. Tiers as needed. We are obviously in the highest tier here. A tournament with just P2 schools is no better than current conference tourneys and winner could make no claim of being the best team in the country. Won’t work. Hockey, baseball, Olympics etc whatever. Regional conferences would cut back on travel expenses and allow for more scholarships. Revenue sharing equitable at tiers. Regs preventing cross sports expenditures. Level playing field by tier. Happier and more engaged fans. The thought that college athletics or football will consist only of 40 ish mostly Midwest and Southern schools and command the nations interest is ridiculous.
