New Hartford arena?

Are they saying its being talked about or just this guy has an idea?

I visited the Sacred Heart Rink during the Ct. Hockey Tournament. It Puts Toscano to SHAME!!!!!. How does a Podunk college like Sacred Heart Out Class Us..... BTW, by a LARGE Amount???? Parking was free, indoor access to the Arena, Someone needs to assess who's running UConn Athletics and FIRE THEM. Let's Hire Bobby Valentine. Let me say, I Played as a Walk on for Uconn Hockey in 1982, in that cold archaic whale, And I hold 2 Uconn Degrees, Am an AVID UConn Football & Basketball fan, but my true love is Hockey. The Fact that Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart have better Hockey Facilities than UConn is Embarasing

So you take the arena out of downtown, and all the establishments that make money off fans proceed to collapse. Yeah that’s great for an already struggling area.

Never ever happen

I hate to inject reality into an idiotic rant, but an AD at UConn is not going to succeed or fail based on how much money he can raise for hockey facilities. So not sorry I missed your two prior posts.

I think what happened with Toscano is that they spent their money on facilities for players rather than on the arena itself. I've often heard comments from visitors how it is "world class". They cannot be talking about what we are actually seeing.

Regarding the design of the arena itself, I think they made two critical errors. Putting in that concrete block house they call the student deck that cost us seats and obstructs the view from some seats is a big one. Likewise, the ice level lounge takes away seats as well. Both may have seemed good in concept, but in a small arena, every seat counts. I would love to see them take a sledgehammer to the student deck and put in seats there and at seats in front of the ice level lounge. They could mount LED TVs where the existing windows are in the lounge and broadcast from a couple of small HD cameras in the boards. Both of those are relatively easy and relatively inexpensive fixes.

Hey, let me just give props to you for playing in the old open air rink. That had to be the coldest place on what can be a really cold campus.

For what it's worth, I saw nothing wrong with your post and I appreciate hearing your opinion.

I used to go to games at that rink and it was the coldest place on earth. I agree with CL82 on this. Plus I’ll add one more. At some point maybe a larger arena makes sense, but I go to games there regularly. Split a some season tix with a couple of guys. And I have rarely seen the place full. At most games they offer standing room folks to take seats after the first period. Lately it has been better but note that they didn’t sell out the season tickets this year. Part of the problem I’d college hockey is not that well followed in the Hartford area. There really is no tradition north of Wallingford. Hockey in general was New Haven south. Even college hockey was Yale and Quinnipiac until pretty recently. We are now in Hockey East but we havent been too successful. Maybe this run helps to changes the perception.

The indoor parking and access to the arena at SHU was great. One of the reasons they were able to achieve this is because of the opportunity to purchase the former General Electric headquarters. Many of those structures already existed and SHU was smart to connect them into the new arena which was the only new cost other than some renovation. It was well executed but at the start had a huge initial advantage when compared to the Toscano project, which unfortunately is underwhelming for fans but great for the players and staff.

at least I'm not the only one who thinks UConn half-assed their rink

edit: the planned Northeastern facility is going to be nuts

This is simply not true.

To be clear, I have utterly no opinion on whether UConn did or didn't do a good job on its new rink. I haven't seen it and I don't know what the old one looked like.

What I know is that even if we built something out of tin foil, what happens regarding our hockey program is not relevant to firing an Athletic Director who just presided over back to back basketball championships, a woman's program that looks like it can make a run at it this year and who hired Jim Mora to start resurrecting the football program.

I also wonder about the parking at SHU. A couple of the guys I split tix with went and had to park a mile away and wait 30 minutes for the 1 shuttle bus taking fans to the game. They missed the opening face off. Now maybe SHU wasn’t expecting the crowd they got and it was unprepared (which raised a different question ) but the situation was only great if you got into the garage. For games at QU I’ve always had to park in a garage that was about as far away as South garage. On Northeastern, I don’t know what to say except they are competing for eyeballs with BC and BU in a race they usually lose. Don’t know the capacity but I do know I have never had trouble getting a ticket there and it has never been sold out. Maybe that is more a reflection on the opponent being UConn than Northeastern but I sort of doubt it.

Hey Biz, maybe give the guy a break on a throwaway comment and focus and the crux of his post?

I know it’s the internet and I (you too) are dinosaurs, but I hope not to live so long that I see the day that someone calling for a human being to lose their job for no rational reason is accepted because there are other points with which one agrees. I don’t get that part of bulletin board culture that a poster can go over the top attacking a third party, but the poster should be free from criticism for doing so.

But you and anyone else is free to see the world differently.

11pm intramurals at that outdoor place were the worst.

Lol, well thank you for permission to disagree... and you're certainly free to post whatever you want, but, in this case, accusing someone of idiocy over a throwaway comment in a post that certainly isn't going to impact Dave Benedict's employment seems like an awful lot of pointless incivility.

You forgot women's hockey HE champs x 2, and a men's team that is top 10 in pairwise this year, super regional baseball team, a blossoming volleyball team, women's lacrosse ranked, and ...

No, I didn't "forget" anything. I think our AD is doing an outstanding job overall throughout the athletic department, but that isn't my point. My point is that at most schools keeping your job is almost entirely dependent upon how football is going, and at UConn keeping your job is dependent on men and women's basketball and then football. It's great that our women's hockey team won it's back to back Hockey East regular season championship yesterday, or that Penders has built the best baseball program year in year out in the northeast and rust belt. But it's not relevant to whether our AD will be viewed as a success.

I am the one who posted the original tweet, I was just curious if anyone here had any intel about this "project."
Is this a legit proposal? Someone grasping at straws? Wishful thinking?

OMG. I played intramurals in the late 80’s. Forget about the cold. How about playing in a blizzard where the wind would blow so hard it would blow the snow sideways, under the roof and onto the ice? By the end of the third period, there would be several inches of snow on the ice and you couldn’t pass or clear the puck out of the zone…

I used to skate there with my (then) wife. Once or twice during the winter was more than enough. COLD!!!
