From an ESPN Insider look-in on PSU Camp:

"One tight end who caught a lot of on-lookers' eyes was 2014 TE Alec Bloom (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier), who stands at 6-foot-7 just like sophomore TE Jesse James. Bloom, whose primary sport was basketball until this year, showed nice hands on several passes. He holds no offers but appears to be primary run-on material. This was his first-ever football camp, and the tight end felt the coaches noticed him Saturday."

>>The 6-foot-7, 242-pound Bloom is a three-sport athlete at District 6-AA Ligonier Valley, participating in football, basketball and track and field.
As a junior in 2012, he caught 16 passes for 337 yards and seven touchdowns in the Rams' run-oriented offense. Ligonier Valley shared the Heritage Conference regular-season title with Penns Manor and finished 10-2 following a 26-12 loss to Forest Hills in the second round of the District 6 playoffs.<<

That is one monster-sized TE. We might be finally getting somewhere on passing offense! What a long wait it's been.

pure speculation but i'd take 50/50 odds that he finishes his career at tackle for UConn.

Happy to have him on board, we are definitely seeing a pattern in terms of what the coaches are looking for in the players' measurables.

I am a huge fan of converting tight ends to the OL, their quick feet and athleticism are an asset, but I just don't see it with Bloom. He does not have a frame conducive to putting on a ton of weight (looking at his highlights in the first post). He does look like an outstanding complete tight end, though. Mixes it up in the run game, and provides a fantastic target in the passing game.

Fair point, I have a harder time judging his frame in those clips. With that size, he should be an asset wherever they line him up.

I think huskysupporter might be right, this kid is a total beanpole, reminds me of that Chichester kid Louisville had like two years ago. Not to say he couldn't fill out, but at 6'7-8" you are really talking about only two positional possibilities: TE or OT. There are clips of him at DE and OLB, but he would get benchpressed by opposing OTs. If i have my druthers, i'm hoping for shades of Ryan Griffin here.

He doesn't fit the pattern of players that this staff brings in for the OL. TE.

I hope TJ's stockpiling size so that Alec's development leads to a freakishly badas#, 6'7", 250lb WR with hands of gold.

We don't graduate too many beanpoles. Our weightroom and the bodies on out arhletes are really impressive. I don't see any reason this kid won't put on at least 30 lbs. that could be done with just bulking up legs chest and shoulders.

Great find and I can't believe I am saying this but Uconn's staff is putting together a intelligent group of kids who seem to have talent plus upside and size to grow. I am pulling for HCPP to do well this year so we can see this group of kids come in. We have never had a good offense since the move to D1. Not even the Orlovsky years gave us a potent offense. Now we have a guy in place who seems to know what he is doing. I feel this might be the break out year if the defense can hold tight.

Hoping the new OC will start drawing up/calling plays to utilize individual skill sets. On paper, he has the size of Jimmy Graham or Gronk. Be curious to see how he develops.
