Follow-up: Uconn's great PGs may not have won any assist titles, but they have won 8 of the 17 Nancy Lieberman awards. One of the telling factors is our great PGs - Moriah, DT, and Jen had career assist numbers of 659 648, 637 and Sue holds the single year mark of 231 with only three other players having more than 200.
That compares to NCAA records of: Single season 367 (Vandersloot) and 12 players with greater than 314; and Career 1307 with 4 players having over 1000 and 26 with more than 825.
And yet Uconn as a team owns the top assist mark for a season at 863 and is the only team to top 800 assists in a year, a feat they have achieved 5 times.
I believe Geno once said that if a recruit comes to UConn they'd never lead the nation in anything except wins.
Odd stat. Gabby Williams is not in the top 20 in assists. NCAA Leaders
But just to qualify your first remark - the "opposite" isn't necessarily that any player is more important THAN the team, rather that individual players on other teams may be more important TO their team.Over the years, UConn players have seldom lead the nation in any individual statistics. As some have pointed out, UConn starters don’t play a lot of minutes. More importantly, UConn’s DNA requires that no player is more important than the team.
When it comes to “team stats” UConn is perennially among the leaders in multiple categories. At present, UConn is 1st in scoring offense, 2nd in A/TO ratio, 2nd in assists, 5th in fewest fouls, 1st in fg %, 5th in defensive fg %, 7th in scoring defense, 1st in scoring margin, 6th in 3-pt shooting % and, most importantly, tied for 1st in win-lost %.
the majority of teams have a more traditional line up with a point guard that facilitates most of the play.....watching the Syracuse point guard earlier tonight, she dribbles the ball for eight seconds, makes one pass and the other player either shoots are passes it back to her, then she dribbles some more until she finds a more willing shooter....that's pretty much their offense.....all five UConn players touch the ball a lot....I would say four out of five touch it at least once per possession the majority of the time so it's unlikely anyone would be a statistical assist leader..
Agree with your comments. I also believe that teams who feature one or two stars, sometimes do so at the expense of the team. tOSU strikes me as one such team. The underachieving Buckeyes have tremendous talent, but on a team dominated by Kelsey Mitchell, the whole is less than the sum of the parts. But just to qualify your first remark - the "opposite" isn't necessarily that any player is more important THAN the team, rather that individual players on other teams may be more important TO their team.
UConn is quote balanced, a lot of talent and rarely any player that isn't. Many teams have 1 or 2 players that are scorers, a player or 2 that see the court well and generate most of the team's assists, or whatever it is. And these teams are not able to place themselves in the position of giving starters significant time off, either, because they don't get out in front like UConn often does as consistently.
And yes, UConn is almost always leaders in multiple categories. What makes them so impressive - among the many things - is that this is virtually always among the leaders on both sides of the ball!
Interesting stuff!Mangakahia's stats for Syracuse are crazy. Her assist percentage is 61.6%. Last year nobody topped 50%. Vandersloot led the WNBA last year at 41.9%
She also has made 22.5% of Syracuse's field goals. So yes, she is either shooting or making the pass that leads directly to a shot on almost every possession. She has 263 assists. The next highest assist total for Syracuse is 29. She has 234 more assist than any other teammate!
I hope she never gets hurt or Hillsman might just have to forfeit the rest of the season!
Also, she turns 23 in April. She is listed as a sophomore. She's going to be playing in the NCAA tournament at (nearly) 25.

Please define assist percentage. Is it the percentage of team baskets that 1 player assists on?
If she’s almost 23, she’s WNBA eligble now.

Actually UCONN placed players in the top 20 only in FG% (Stevens) and 3pt% (Lou and Kia). Probably if this web page had number of 3pt made, then Lou and Kia would have been in the top 20. With 6 players sharing all aspects of the game it is hard to place many players in the top 20. UCONN is about team wins and team stats, not individual leaders in stats.
Also, Lou is ranked 12th in assist to turnover ratio (one more assist and she would be at an even 3 to 1.)Actually UCONN placed players in the top 20 only in FG% (Stevens) and 3pt% (Lou and Kia).
